A Sailor Moon blog

This is mainly based in the anime and my own point of view. There's spoilers too

Usagi's destiny

Usagi is a girl between 14 and 16. She's a highschool student who suddenly has the weight of the world on her shoulders, she's forced to grow up sooner because of her past life.

She's confused, excited and scared. Her first battle is literally fighting agaisnt her friend's possessed mother and she's expected to know almost perfectly what to do when she doesn't even understand why she has to be a hero in the first place.

Later we are introduced to the other Sailor Scouts and Usagi's new friends. From my point of view, Usagi is the most realistic with how an average teenager would react when realizing that her life is going to change drastically.

She slowly discovers her past life, now, let's remember, she's 14, you're telling a 14 year old girl she was the Princess Serenity in her past life and now she's destinated to be a Sailor Scout and fight to save the future in the name of love.

She suddenly has the responsabilities of an adult, and of course, the Sailor Scouts too, but it's harder for her because she's supossed to be the most powerful. This might seem not that bad at first, but she watches her lover being kidnapped and her friends deaths in front of her eyes, one by one without being able to do anything.

The Sailor Scouts are constantly dying in the series, leaving Usagi alone, and tortured.

(Note: Yes, that's not an exaggeration, she DOES get tortured by the villains. Also Naoko;the creator had planned Sailor Moon to be more explicit and even darker but she wasn't allowed to at. But, the manga is more explicit and some even say that the escenes are more like horror.)

What love means in Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon's main topic is love, the love Usagi feels for her friends, family and partner. Love in Sailor moon, to me, seems like sacrifices, Sailor Moon will sacrifice her own life just so her friends and her lover can be alive once again. I think  that's the saddest part of Sailor Moon, how she'll always sacrifice herself to give her friends a chance to live happy once again.

But not everything is just sadness, let's not forget that all the main Sailors are the same age, so they also explore their own ways of love with crushes. And in  my opinion, that's my favorite thing.

Ami with Ryo.

Rei with Mamoru and after discovering his past with Usagi, she starts catching feelings for Yuichiro.

Mina specially with Armand, who she lets for similar reasons as Rei.

Makoto who...falls in love with every guy that crosses her path.

And of course, Usagi with Mamoru.

Usagi is really strong emotionally

With the things I have mentioned, I think it's right to say that Usagi is in fact very strong, she's a teenager carrying a huge responsability, the future of her and everyone else is her responsability and she has to not only fight agaisnt villains but also stay strong even when she has lost everything.

A huge example of this is in Sailor Moon Cosmos (SPOILERS!!), where she's almost alone the whole time. She loses her friends, Mamoru is dead, even the Sailor Star Lights die at some point, Chibiusa and Sailor Galaxia die and she find herself completaly alone and without any reason left to keep fighting, so she falls apart and loses hope.

But before all that, she kept fighting for what she cared more about, for her loved ones, for the future, even after her friends and Mamoru's deaths, she kept trying to save everyone.

This isn't the first time Sailor Moon dies, but it hits harder when you remember she was just 16 years old when she had to live all of this, when she had to protect everyone alone.

Conclusion

Sailor Moon is an anime that explores the relationships of its protagonist in a dark and tragic way such as her having to save Mamoru more than once, losing him again and again just like her friends, but it also shows how Usagi slowly grows up without losing her spark or changing her personality.

If you wanna have a more accurate version of the anime and that sticks more to the manga, you should watch Sailor Moon Cosmos, but if you wanna watch the things I mentioned, take a look at the Sailor Moon of the 90s, it has so many romances and explores more things related to the character's life.

Sailor Moon also touches way deeper and darker topics besides the ones I mentioned, but I might do another blog for those.

I had so much fun making this blog!!
