I say this because "indie sleaze" was coined after covid!!
but it was also emblematic of a time that we cannot ever return to - it wasn't messy on purpose, it was messy bc there wasn't tiktok yet to flame random people with if they were caught looking a little cringe. the state of social media was near nonexistent and people weren't super unafraid of being unfiltered. cobrasnake the nonce went to real parties with no prior announcement and took flash photography in the moment. it was also the recession and the only thing people could really afford was a load of cheap drinks at somebody's house party. there was no tomorrow to wait for, because you couldn't save up for one! with the new addition of social media in the culture, it's going to look very different - like, did anybody see rachel sennott at charli xcx's birthday bash? she was clearly posing to look like she was having a messy time, and it looked manufactured as hell!
i don't think you should care at all though, and I apply this reason to how many people speak about skins - it's not a "bygone" era at all yet. you can still have crazy nights out with friends at house parties, have sticky hair in the morning and develop an infected sinus from laced cocaine abuse. I think my time nowadays is pretty "indie sleaze" in energy and all I do is just show up to the party. then again a lot of the people calling for an "indie sleaze revival" don't have parents who let them go out, so I don't think it's an issue if we leave it in the past.
