The Good Place (Netflix TV show)

Alright, so in my psychology class the other day we were discussing free will vs determinism. Essentially, this is the debate of whether your actions are based on your own free choices or whether they're pre-determined by different aspects of your life- be it genetics, upbringing, etc.

Anyway, there's an episode in The Good Place that features two of the main characters discussing free will vs determinism. My psychology teacher decided to show us this episode to highlight the key differences between the two theories, and I was instantly hooked on the show. I've been thinking about it ever since, especially since I had literally never heard of it before and yet everyone seemed to already be familiar with the episode. I'll be honest- it seems really entertaining.

I'm literally three episodes in and it's consuming my thoughts (I'm autistic- it's not unusual for me to hyperfixate on things I enjoy) and I was just wondering if there's anyone else on here that's seen it? And, without giving spoilers, telling me your opinions on it? I'd love to discuss it with people!

Also, was it just me that got Beetlejuice vibes from the second episode? The part in the film where they try to go outside and instead are greeted with a desert and a giant worm, it felt like when the characters in The Good Place tried to go outside and were greeted with a giant ladybug and other strange instances.

As someone who's rather anxious about death and what happens after life is finished, The Good Place seems like a good show to relieve my stress towards it. It makes light of death as soon as the series starts, even making it appear comical due to how the main character (I forgot her name, don't judge I just started this show) died before the beginning of the show. It just seems like a fun way to avoid my anxiety, which is something I've been searching for for quite a while.

There was no real point to this blog by the way, I just like being able to get my thoughts out there and hopefully find like-minded individuals while doing so. Have a good day/night! And I hope I was able to entertain someone for at least a little while.

Love The Good Place (not a robot), but the question is flawed. Determinism =/= free will. You can willingly decide something, yet the probabilities may go against it, or vice-versa. They are more like overlapping sets.
