modern art|cat yaps #1

bro yk whats been rlly pissing in my pot lately is ppl discrediting modern / contemporary artists

like you know how theres that one (stupid) trend on tiktok where people stand next to art they think they could do themselves

now while usually the art is simple in terms of physical arrangement, the whole statement itself is still discrediting the entire point of contemporary art as a whole

so, you know how people say that all art is an expression of emotion. i actually kind of disagree with that.

im saying this because not all art is a form of deep inner expression. like not all my art holds some deep emotional merit to it.

that being said, a lot of it does. art CAN be very personal to the creator and it can be personal to the viewer as well

like i can only imagine how id feel if someone trampled all over my art just because its "simple" when a lot of my pieces are an expression of the extensive grief ive gone through

so anyways, what im getting to is not all art is deep. like realism paintings are probably praised the most, and those are the ones that are most often not drawn with any given meaning in mind.

i guess people have this preconveived notion that art has to be "good" by technical standards to be art, whether its a genuine form of expression or not

i guess its a valid line of thinking for a non-artist but regardless its still demeaning to the whole concept of art

so while a painting of a fruit bowl, while still being a valid art form and taking immense talent obviously, doesn't necessarily carry any kind of given meaning, i think most if not all contemporary art actually does

the main reason i have this idea is just because its such an open form of expression compared to pencil on paper. yes its "just a pane of stained glass" but why? what does that mean for this person? that out of all the things in the world they chose this to put on display

i think that it takes a far deeper level of introspection and creativity and thats the thing i find the most admirable in an artists mind, its something i really strive for in myself

so yeah, while i guess you could technically make Portrait of Ross, you really wouldn't, because you havent gone through that pain and you don't have the kind of mind it takes to think a piece like that. thats what im saying

i honestly wish more people would get this concept tbh but yeah all those comments i saw like 'IF MODERN ART HAS NO HATERS IM DEAD' rlly got to me

i totally agree with this. this uncharitable idea buzzing around in tandem with the take that "weird art can't be political" on twitter has been making me grow grey hairs against my better judgement
