Giving life meaning (tw suicide)

A talk I had with a suicidal friend of mine got me thinking.  He told me "Life is meaningless, and therefore there is no point in my existence."  And it really poses a question, why are we here? what is the reason we are in this life, here and now?

I argue that, it's true, you're not born knowing the meaning of life, and that is kind of the point.  You give life a meaning by, well, finding it yourself.  For some it could be religion, or your job, your connections to others or maybe even a hobby.  We are all brought into chaos, but we have the choice to give that chaos meaning ourselves.

I exist on the earth because of my connections.  I strive to put good into the world in any way possible.  I realize that one day, no one will even know my name, given enough time, but I'm here today, and I want to use that to bring good to others until I take my last breath. That's what I try to do. I love being alive, because one day I will not be.  So I am trying to live every day to its fullest.

We're obsessed with assigning purpose to things.

Giving life a meaning is a bit like say the meaning of the Sun's existence is to provide life and warmth. It isn't ; it just happens to do that and other things happen as a result.

Things simply are, including life. We are hard-wired to intellectualize everything as it has helped with our survival, but it is maladaptive to do so with philosophical concepts.

I mean it makes sense, we've had to fight to survive for all of humanity, and as such being the one to know that a tiger is bad and assigning meaning to each thing we find was an evolutinary necessity.
