black + white polaroids taken with a polaroid i-2

the first one is of me, then the rest i took. i bought this camera about a year ago and i've been really enjoying it! it's not cheap, and to be honest, it has its faults that i'm still learning to work around to get the control i want, but i like the versatility between being a one-and-done autofocus camera and having manual control. i used to just have an old school '90s polaroid box camera and it was great for sunny conditions but not really that versatile, so after a decade or so it felt like time for an upgrade.

at first i was looking at some older polaroid cameras like the SLR 680, and it's a shame this is not an SLR, but for the price it still takes great photos.

i got it about a year ago when i made more money and fell back down an ADHD rabbit hole with instant photography, and i'm really glad i didn't sell it. sometimes, when i'm in a rut and don't want to go outside, i'll load a pack of film in it, and force myself to not come back home until i find a pack of film worth of pictures to take. that way, when i make it back home, i made some sort of art that i'm proud of, or at least tried to make art.

i took these when i went to the norton simon museum and the museum of neon art, both must visits if you're in the greater LA area! the norton simon is free if you have a student ID (but you can definitely get away with showing them an old one, if you still have it, ha)

I resonate so much with this. That feeling of loading up a camera with film and just going outside to see what there is to see is such a unique feeling. It forces you to look at your day with a little more perspective than you might not have noticed originally.

I should dust off the ol polaroid, myself. Thanks for sharing!

ps your hair is so cool!

Thank you so much!! And yeah they definitely do have a very distinct look so all for you giving it another go especially since you do so much cool mixed media type work already

woah! that's sick! ive got a cool polaroid SX-70 but the film is eye-wateringly expensive, plus i'm an SLR photographer, so i use my 35mm film kit. definitely looking to experiment with polaroid though, hope mine look as cool as this!

Oh, I've always wanted the SX-70. It's such a masterpiece of design and one of the most beautiful cameras ever made. Definitely a very expensive medium I agree but shooting with it always feels like a special treat. Thank you for your comment!

Thank you!! Yeah Polaroid film does incredibly well with neon and artificial lights especially, I have some color ones I've taken of neon signage I should scan, there's just something about the chemistry of the film makes bright artificial lights look really really sharp and crisp and bright, it's really cool!

Fuck yea, make art! These are great and mildly inspiring. I have an old box polaroid in the closet somewhere. My late grandma bought it for me for my birthday when I was a knee hight because I wouldn't stop fucking around with hers lol. I might go digging for it later, if I can bring myself to commit to the cost of the film. What does that go for these days?

Thank you! It depends on whether you have an older camera or a new one. It's a money pit either way but there is a couple of bucks difference per pack. The older cameras, like 2000s and before, need a battery to be in the actual pack of film so that makes it cost a couple of bucks more per pack. The newer ones already have a battery in the camera so no battery in the film cartridge so it's a bit cheaper per pack. I usually stock up on the sales on Polaroid website and get bundles that come around to around $1.50 to $1.75 a photo. If you get them from a retail place like Best Buy it can get pricy, like $3 a photo.

It's definitely not cheap and Instax is a lot cheaper. But I also don't trust Amazon's cheaper prices on Polaroid because I don't really trust that they sell fresh film and Polaroid film chemistry tends to expire pretty quickly compared to Instax.

That's a lot of good info. I think I'm in the battery film camp cause my grandma bought it for me back in the 90s. I'll go check out poloroid's website thanks for the tip!
