Alright, listen up, internet. It’s 2014, and the web is getting way too safe, clean, and honestly, boring. You know what we need to bring back? Shock websites. Yeah, you heard me—those wild, crazy, messed-up corners of the internet that you knew you shouldn’t click, but always did anyway. Remember the rush of adrenaline when someone dropped a link to Meatspin, Goatse, or Rotten.com in a chat? Pure chaos. And I’m here to say, WE NEED THAT BACK.
The internet is turning into this sanitized, corporate space where everything’s “safe for work” and carefully curated. We’ve got memes, social media drama, and like a million YouTube reaction channels, but where’s the edge? Where’s the unpredictability? Back in the early 2000s, you never knew what you’d stumble across online. That sense of danger made the internet exciting.
Shock websites were the ultimate internet initiation. They weren’t just about grossing you out (though, let’s be real, they were REALLY good at that). They were about testing your limits. They were the digital version of dares—if you could handle seeing the worst of the worst, you could handle anything. There was something raw and authentic about it. Sure, they were disgusting and scarring (RIP our innocent eyes), but it bonded us. You didn’t really know someone until you’d forced them to witness the horrors of 2girls1cup.
And yeah, I get it—shock websites were offensive, crude, and gave you nightmares. But isn’t that the point? The internet used to be the wild west, and now it’s like some gated suburban community where everyone’s afraid to step out of line. Everything’s so predictable now, and we’re just scrolling through the same old content, refreshing the same pages. It’s like we’ve forgotten how to push boundaries and really shock people.
I’m not saying we need to go back to traumatizing people (okay, maybe just a little). But we could use a little more of that shock value. Something to shake things up and remind people that the internet isn’t just a place for carefully crafted tweets and mukbung videos.
So yeah, bring back the shock websites. Maybe not the exact same ones (I’m still trying to recover from seeing Goatse at 9), but something that’ll make people say, “What the actual F did I just watch?”

*PS: If you don’t know what shock websites are, congrats on your wholesome internet experience, though im here to ruin it for you. So, heres a link to the wayback machine rotten.com (goodluuuck)

home sweet home
Dude. Holy shit you get it. YOU GET THE VISION. I too am so tired of this fabricated, made for children nonsense. I get it. We need educative content. Yet, as a person who grew up actively rebelling against my parents rules about internet usage day in - day out, I grow worried that my kids will grow addicted to it. But I also want them to be excited for what it has to hold.
Bring the edge back certainly. Love me some fucked up shit (in moderation).
But let's also bring back common sense to wandering in the web. TEACH the ways of posting, dealing with discourse, knowing how to block and so on n' so forth.
Once they got the basics down, I feel it could help maintain a good & healthy relationship to the asinine shit we see. Our internet is not perfect by many means. It's a cesspool of EVERYONE'S CONSCIOUSNESS. And like someone else's brain, you don't physically have it and yet we're exposed to a million of them every day.
So, all in all, enjoy the adrenaline rush. But learn to detach and respect others for posting weird shit. We're all living on the same planet and have our own ideas anyways. Fuck purity. I (and yourself) want raw, authentic, real experiences in a digital space.
Keep it metal af bro. Like the energy <3
