[My thoughts]

mkay, so, i actually watched this movie with one of my friends like WEEKS ago (shoutout 2 emma <33) and i can't exactly remember every single thing that happened or my first initial reaction to it, so this review is honestly just gonna be on what i do remember and what feelings/thoughts stuck with me up until now. anyway, i've been yapping too much nonsense that isn't even related to the movie, so let's go ahead and get onto the review!!

{SPOILERS AHEAD!!}

i’ve genuinely been sitting here for the past 15 minutes trying to perfectly sum up my thoughts, and i just can’t do it.

it’s a severely flawed and imperfect story (not necessarily in a bad way), and i think that’s what’s making this review so difficult to write out.

the one thing i can actually say about this movie rn though is that i HATEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE the pedo plot. i know that the times the movie is set in was just so exposed to pedophilia to the point where it became super normal and natural to just see a teen girl having romantic relations with a guy older than 20, but nope. absolutely not. it was so hard to get through those parts without dying of cringe and disgust, and unfortunately for me their relationship is literally like almost all of the damn movie so ..

i was actually dying. like, literally.

and ohmygod, the mom?! this woman is genuinely such a complex character that i can’t bring myself to decide whether i hate or tolerate her. she’s a single mom with two kids, trying to do the best she can raising them by herself, but at the same time she’s sabotaging so much not only for her kids but for HERSELF. her finally finding a good relationship in lou that she ends up self sabotaging because she’s not used to committing, her making such a habit out of running away and moving from her problems that when it came down to her daughter having a literal mental breakdown, charlotte did what she learnt from her mother and she ran away from their home. and THENNNN rachel had the nerve to yell and argue with charlotte about what she had done as if she wasn’t the one that literally started the cycle of running away from ur problems ..

it was bizarre. and then rachel kissing joe on new years after he dropped her off was just, a really awful moment for her. i hate charlotte and joe’s “relationship”, but you can’t tell me that rachel kissing him when she knew that her own daughter was into him was justified at all.

and the scene where kate was literally DROWNING while charlotte was too busy being freaky literally made me sob and i wanted to actually scream cause of how mad i was getting over that scene

like, i know u can’t really fully blame charlotte because ya know, she’s a teen and it’s not her job to watch her younger sister all the time, but MAYBE DONT LEAVE UR LITTLE SISTER OUTSIDE ALONE EXTREMELY TIPSY?? as a matter of fact, DONT LET HER GET TIPSY AT ALL?? she’s like what, 7 or 8 in this movie? like HELLO! common sense girl, common sense.

ugh, idk, this movie was an extreme rollercoaster, but it’s still added into my personal favs list on letterboxd (oops) cause i love messy and flawed movies <33

also, emma said something about the reason that joe left near the end of the movie is because he could’ve been tried as a pedophile/offender if he stayed?! idk if that’s actually canon or not, but he should’ve stayed and gotten locked up cause that dude is a plain out freak and deserves like major jail time for his actions.

oh, and lou is an absolute SWEATHEARTTTTT. ugh, i love him sm <33 he was so sweet to the kids, and the way he literally repainted a room for the kids in *his* house even though him and rachel weren’t even that serious yet (or at least in her mind they werent) ?!?!?! actually crying

in a world full of chads, find yourself a lou <33

i think, that concludes the review?? this def wasn’t worth the long wait so i’m SORRRYYYY, but i hope you guys enjoyed it anyway!

i might come back and add onto this if i rememeber something later on, but that’s it for now! thank you so much for reading it, and just remember that you’re extremely loved!

mwah, bye!! <33

(also, the auto play thingy won’t work on this blog 4 some reason, so just ignore the fact that it’s complete silence LMAOOO)

i watch this movie every fall, it’s one of my favorite movies just because of the vibe it gives off, but that man was definitely a pedo + cher, winona and christina look like a family (p.s i also cried)

oh yeah, i totally agree with you on that!!
the casting directors definitely did their thing with this movie !
cher, winona and christina are such a perfect pairing and it worked out so well, especially when it came to the intense & emotional scenes between cher and winona’s characters !!
also, i never even thought of mermaids possibly being a fall movie! hm, i might rewatch it sometime this fall and see how the vibes are 💗🍂
