First societal issue within the book

This was when Tong asked Buwaya and Maya the location of the puso ng saging, but to get his answer, Buwaya told him to give him the pearls first before telling him, claiming he was the king of the jungle. After lending him the pearls, Buwaya suddenly tried to kill Tong.

This scene is a clear example of bribery by how Buwaya tries to force Tong into giving him pearls in exchange for information. If we relate this in real life, we can use vote buying as an example. Although, this is mostly seen within the government since corruption is a form of bribery. A news report of this issue can be seen Here. (Courtesy of GMA, 24 Oras)

Second societal issue within the book.

When Tong met Bibe and Palaka, Palaka was proclaiming that he was the king of the jungle. Tong then found out that Palaka had stolen his pearls from other creatures from the sea.

This is an example of embezzlement or identity theft. Assuming that Palaka decided to proclaim that he was the king to the sea creatures. He had allured them to give him their pearls. This can be compared to real life with recent news. A former head of a Lebanese central bank is currently in court for embezzlement charges against him. (Courtesy of The Guardian). Meaning, they took the people's money and pocketed it.

Third societal issue within the book.

In the third encounter, Tong saw Leon and thought that he would kill him, but he did not. Instead, he just asked Tong for a favor to find Manok and Pagong and to return their eggs.

This scene represents societal standards. Symbolizing how quickly one person is to be judged. Be it, their clothing, social status or physical belongings. This can also count as bullying/cyber-bullying. Misjudging someone may damage their mental health and feel unsafe in their own skin.

Fourth societal issue within the book.

In this part of the story, the insects plan on revolting against the animals residing in the jungle.

The reason of insects planning a revolution against animals portrays a social issue wherein the lower class or marginalized groups feel neglected by the government. In this context, the animals represent the people in power, whilst the insects represent marginalized groups. The insects' revolution shows the anger and frustration among the lower class resulting from inequality and neglect. An example of protests to fight against poverty can be seen here.

Fifth societal issue within the book.

After returning Pagong and Manok's eggs, he asked where is Aso and was accompanied to him. Aso told Tong where the puso ng saging was and it can grant anyone a wish. But in the condition if it wasn't used to cure someone, it will bring bad omens to the animals in the forest.

This symbolizes greed. It also shows that our actions have consequences, whether it would be us, ourselves or to those around us. This can apply to gamblers, they frequently bet thousands on casino games. Just for them to lose it all and be bankrupt. Leaving them and their families in ruins.

Sixth societal issue within the book.

After the election was discontinued due to bribery, Ulang had passed away. Tong realized how harsh the world could be. He then met Matsing who showed him the true meaning of life.

Ulang was a lobster that was being paid for doing nothing at all. Which can be symbolized for the politicians that are barely doing anything to help their people and is living their best life. Many people have taken notice of this. Here is a blog post written by Bob Hudson. And this is a study talking about how politicians implement inefficient policies.
