poem for school assignment!!

In Deep Winter

Their lives a man in a house by a stream,

Beyond the thicket of snow-covered pine,

Through snow-blinded eyes it is not what it seems,

As it glimmers in light of the full moon shine.

They say that his house will only appear,

When the red-yellow leaves of autumn fall,

When the only sound that one could hear,

Is the sound of an omnipresent crow call.

When the bears are asleep and the lake freezes over,

When the night grows longer than day,

When the fields have been harvest of straw and of stover,

When the snow makes the sky turn gray.

The townsfolk would never dare enter the wood,

The trees loom tall and bizarrely overgrown.

They stayed afar from it as they could,

Out of fear of the unknown.

The moon hangs pale as I walk without thought,

Farther than the cobblestone street,

And into the woods not knowing what I sought,

As the snow crunches under my feet.

The man’s house in the distance and I walk to the light,

But the whiteout vails the fading glow,

As I wander aimlessly in the boundless woods,

In Deep Winter and in endless snow.

i wrote this poem as an assignment for my English class. the assignment was to write a poem about nature and/or the unknown, and it had to be 24 lines with an abab rhyme pattern, as well as having to be named after a painting of similar subject. the painting i chose was In Deep Winter by Richard von Drasche-Wartinberg.

we didnt have very much time to write it and we didnt get to present them in class but i think mine turned out pretty good... first poem ive written this year, but i used to write some pretty bad ones a while ago... they were really cringe and super edgy.

i hope you liked it though!!
