ok so ive looked around on this website and all the people that I think are cool listen to 9-inch-nails. I plan on giving them a listen at some point but I want to see what other people have to say about them before I give them a shot. What can I expect?

NIN is one of my all time favourite bands! But what you'd expect from going into them is something with rock/metal, with some industrial aspects to them. (popular industrial band for reference: KMFDM.) Along with slight ethereal/pure instrumentals. The Downward Spiral is one of their few popular albums, and is frankly all over the place when it comes to songs in there. Instrumentals/Vocals/Harsh/Loud/Quiet, but it's a great listen. 'March Of The Pigs', 'Closer', 'Mr. Self Destruct', and 'Hurt' being their most popular and well known from it.
If you're looking for "softer" songs but still in the same category I'd recommend 'With Teeth' for an album. His voice is slightly smoother in quality, and less 'CLANG!' Plus, it has one of their best songs in there 'The Hand That Feeds'!

NIN are amazing, very unique sound, harsh tones, overall industrial style with a lot of variation and sometimes heartfelt sometimes REALLY explicit lyrics.
