i think its the same mentality behind the old hating the young. like they see new people coming in and doing things in their new way and dislike it- either because its different or because they don't have the self respect to admit that they aren't the only people who can do a certain thing

Authenticity. People gatekeep things in hope that the stuff that they like remain original and untouched. They wished for the artists they like to remain true to their work and persona.

When a certain community gatekeep something, it is oftentimes with respect and see themselves as the protector of the art, culture, and the legacy which is often bigger than just the artist itself. They simply wishes for the artist to be able to have freedom and authenticity with their arts.

Obviously everyone wants their favorite artists to prosper and thriving, it just that when something gets popular it becomes a burden towards the artists, as in now they're forced to conform to the "masses" and "normality" which wasnt there where they started in the first place.

Now suddenly all eyes on that person, watching and prying their every moves. Suddenly anything they have said in their whole life before the fame can be used against them. Now they even cant speak their mind freely because now they represent their label/agency/group. Now suddenly theres no more new music because their label never give their albums a greenlight. So on and so forth, hope you get the idea.

Gatekeeping was done NOT to push people away from enjoying the material but to act as a filter to protect the haters from infiltrating and ruining the community.
