Minds and ants

Short version: You realise something simple, buy bread and go to sleep.

Long and carefully written version:

Imagine if one day you wake up, like every other day and notice something that wasn't there before. It could be a new web spun by that hairy spider you refused to kill out of simple laziness or maybe a line of ants heading for a crumb of bread you left behind while you were eating. Things as simple and normal as these but which you don't see every day is the sensation you encountered today. You discovered that you are aware of your consciousness. It's strange, who would stop to think such a thing. It's like thinking that your teeth have a taste or that your brain has named itself. 

You put on your gumboots and went out to buy bread, seeing that in an attempt to make yourself breakfast there was no bread left. Every step you took, the stranger the feeling became. It wasn't that important but it seemed so. What else didn't you know? You looked at the people around you. A well-dressed man in a hurry because he was going to be late for work, a mother with her attention directed to a child who was happily plucking pieces of grass, an old woman playing a game of chess in the corner with her best friend... So many people around and you needed to stop and think about your idea. Were they all aware of their consciousness too? Did they know they were human beings? Did they feel the touch of their own existence?

You stood there for so long thinking that it was the wind, blowing a dry leaf in your face, that made you wake up. Believe it or not, your rubber boots were no longer on your feet, the purse in your pocket had lost weight and in your right hand was a loaf of bread. The time had passed, letting in the big, yellowish moon and allowing the sky to darken to make the smaller stars visible. As the hours passed you just lay back in bed, closing your eyes waiting for it to repeat itself. Yes, you had been aware of your own consciousness all this time, but were you aware of your state? I don't think so ;) 

By the way, because your head was in the clouds all this time, you didn't take the change when you bought the bread! And you didn't even put the bread in the fridge, the ants are going to feast on it!
