Hey SpaceSleepers (88): Reason that I am Corny #392

A really annoying trait of mine is that I am really pretentious about listening to music if their fanbase is too atrocious and/or loud online. Firstly, it kind of gives the artist a level to compete with. Can their art really justify having a fanbase this irritating? Secondly, like consuming the greatest foods at the worst times in your life and attempting to eat it at a better time, it ruins the media for me. If I try to listen to the music, my first thought is probably not going to be the lyrical genius of the work, it will likely be about how annoying the fans are and turn me off from the music. It just absolutely sours the art for me in a way that makes me not want to engage with even a twelve-foot stick.

I acknowledge that it makes me seem really corny and kitschy. I did say "and/or", meaning that there is a case where people just talk about the music too much and it causes me to lose interest in it. I think music for me is a very personal experience. If I am not going through random mixtapes and playlists and finding the musician, and instead it is a bunch of people I don't know online talking about it, I have a tendency to just put my interest in the music to the side. It emerges from this sense of betrayal I have gotten in the past from people really embellishing a musician in the past, only for me to find their music to be unimpressive. If I find the musician on my own, I probably wouldn't give that artist much of a thought, but after finding out they're popular and for reasons unbeknownst to me, it does become a lot more unimpressive (09/04/2024).
