So I get into disputes with my parents over technology. They consist of telling me that I'm making detrimental decisions to my advantages I would have had with the computers they have provided me, being those decisions are to use laptops and computers from before 2013.
This would not be such a problem if I had decided to use secure software with these computers, since eWaste is such a problem and keeping an older computer in use is actually a good thing to all of us, but instead of using something like modern Linux that only 64bit computers, so making my netbook excluded, I have decided to use Windows 7 indefinitely. (Unless ReactOS is going to get a stable release any time soon, although I don't think that's going to happen.)
This is a problem for 3 reasons:
- I cannot upgrade my computer beyond a certain point in time hardware wise.
- relatively soon at least 90% of the software running under Windows 7 will also be out of date and insecure (although a web browser might be supporting it for longer than average software, making this point mildly irrelevant due to most programs I need to use being via a browser anyways)
- I cannot use the family home network because my stepdad rightly thinks that a worm will get to his work computer.
That last point means that I have to use my phone's tethering capabilities in order to use the internet on my out of date devices. This wouldn't be so bad, if my parents hadn't capped my unlimited access at full speed to 5 gigs a month. I don't mind the slow speeds for the websites I visit for hobby, (like this one) but that does mean I can't really use any actually modern heavy webpages reasonably after a certain point.
This blog entry is basically to highlight some bad decisions I make, so that people are fully aware before they actually try to interact with me. Thank you for reading, Maura George.
