And just like that, it's over!
Before I jump into the review, I must say that following this show was quite the ride. I remember watching the first episode back when I was a junior in high school, and now I'm starting my sophomore year of college. Time flies, doesn't it? Both I and the series have changed a lot! Murder Drones is severely flawed, but hey, at least I can say I've followed a series to its end.
So...first I need to address the elephant in the room...the writing. A lot of people have complained that this final episode didn't really feel like the end. I agree. So many things were left unanswered. What is the Absolute Solver? What was CYN's/the Solver's true goal? How did everything return to normal? The first half of the episode was okay, but after that, it just felt like everything got solved unbelievably quickly. I will admit that Uzi eating CYN's core was a creative decision that satisfied most viewers, but why did we flash forward to Uzi giving a presentation? How in the world did the planet get put back together? I feel like we missed something there.
Then we have the NUzi stuff, lol. I called it from a mile away, as soon as the music started swelling. Honestly, this is a relationship done right, in the context of a somewhat plot-driven show. It didn't take away from the episode, or even the series in general. Also, I'm adding that N and Uzi hugging moment to my tiny collection of couples hugging instead of kissing upon confession. And, of course, in true Murder Drones fashion, the moment is interrupted, and Uzi becomes a firey fidget spinner lol V came back, which was cool, but how? The other characters don't even have a chance to ask, nor does she ever explain herself. J also feels underutilized. Why did she follow CYN although she was revealed to not be Tessa? She barely existed in the other episodes and it's not necessarily clear to anyone if she's dead or still alive. Everything just felt a little rushed. Liam claims that this is where he wanted to see the series end. It's okay to leave some loose ends in your narrative to keep the fanbase alive, but too much was left unanswered.
Okay, that's enough of the problems I have with the finale. On to the good stuff! So, naturally, the animation was amazing. CYN's animation especially hits that feeling of awkwardness and creepiness. There were some good moments of exaggeration, such as N being in the spaceship, and the anime/power battle that went on during the episode. The fight choreography was insane. Props to the animators and storyboard artists. I didn't really get a laugh out of this episode, but it's the finale, so, that wasn't really its goal. However, I will say that N holding the How to Draw anime book was pretty funny.
So one thing I'd like to highlight about this series is less about the content and more about the distribution. One of the things about Murder Drones that makes it stand out against other animated shows is that episodes have considerable distance between each other's release dates. It gives people room to speculate and theorize about the new episodes and allows for more engagement. This is extremely rare given that we live in the age of streaming services, where all episodes drop at one time. I really hope that this becomes the standard again someday.
All in all, this was fun. Now that all the episodes are out, I'll likely do a marathon in October or something. Maybe then I'll post my thoughts on the entire series. Also, I decided to not get the standee, but N's hangtail keychain! I can't wait for it to get here.
And, for the final time, N is best boy!
