It all starts with a point.A point is not considered a dimension.Because its nothing more than a dot,no length ,no width, notghing. The 1st dimension adds length. Think of it as a straight line .Because a straight line is all there is to the 1st dimension. Something could posssibly only move backwards or forewards in the 1st dimension, simply following length. But if something was to try to see something in the 1st dimension, all it would be able to see would be a point. So the 1st dimension sort of perceives everything in the 0th dimesnion,if you could call it that.
The 2nd dimension is something we all are familiar with. The 2nd dimension is length and width. Although something in the 2nd dimension would have the ability to go north and south, left and right and so on , it couldnt possibly move up or down.Because there is no depth. 2nd dimension would just be flat. And since its flat, something in the 2nd dimension would see everything as a line. So again, 2nd dimension views their world in the 1st dimension.
Now lets move to our own dimension, 3d. Now that we have depth, we have the ability to move up and down. Theres not much to explain about the 3rd dimension, after all we live in it. But something youve probably never thought about is that we see the world in 2d. The only reason we can tell depth and perspective by sight is because of lights and the shadows they create. If i were to show you a ball, then move it further away from you, you would be able to tell that its getting further away because its getting smaller. However,if it did not have the shadows, how would you know that the ball was getting further away? How do you know if its not actually just getting smaller? You dont. Because even though light and the obvious knowledge of that we live in the third dimension tricks our brain into thinking we percieve things in 3d, our sight is only capable of percieving things in 2d.
So after all this youll think ''What is the 4th dimension?'' Well,we dont really have the words for it.The most popular theory is time, but theres another one.Ill talk about both. After all if youve read this far it sounds like you are actually interested and wont mind that this will be longer than i intended it to be.
Honestly, im not very educated on the time theory. So if this is something you really are interested in, i reccomend you dont rely on my word too much about this part and and read a few essays yourself instead. But to put it simply, time cannot exist without space and space cannot exist without time.Technically, you cannot explain were something is without explaining when it is. Technically time is always the 4th dimension but in most situations we don't approach the concept of time in this manner because the effects of special relativity are only really noticable at speeds comparable to the speed of light. My opinion on this is that time could be a dimension, but not a spatial one. Now since our 3 dimensional minds can hardly comprehend the idea of higher dimensions and cannot possibly imagine exactly how it would look like, we can never be so sure. Maybe its that i am used to the idea of dimensions being spatial and henceforth, i do not recognize time as a dimension. But who knows? The time theory really does confuse me so ill move on to the other one.
The other theory, and the one i believe more in, is that you can take a point and give it a dimension by moving away from it at a ninety degree angle.Actually, this is not exactly the theory. Its how it works until the third dimension. A square has 4 points that all have 2 lines coming out of it that are within ninety degrees to eachother. Then we have a cube.Every point has three lines coming off of it,again, at ninety degrees to each other. Now we move on to the third dimension. Every point has four lines coming off of it, at ninety degrees to each other. That is called a tesseract.( I dont know how to make hyperlinks so just look it up. ) So on and on it repeats like that. We cannot truly represent the hıgher dimensions in the lower dimensions, we cannot even visualize it. Yes we have a picture of the tesseract, but it is nowhere near what the 4th dimension would actually be like. Your three dimensional brain cannot comprehend the higher dimensions. This theory also implies that there are infinite number of dimensions.
Thats all i have to say about it. Please excuse how badly written this is. I am a bored 15 year old writing an essay in 30 minutes. This topic is also hard to explain without visuals. If you are knowledgeable about this topic, please do give feedback and more information. If anyone did actually read this, thanks! I know noone on spacehey cares about essays ,or if this even is considered an essay, but im just bored.
i categorized this as life because...what am i supposed to categorize it as?
