Hey SpaceSleepers (71): Do the Crawl by Cloroform

Cloroform is an alternative rock band from Stavanger, Norway formed in 1998 by John Erik Kaad, Øyvind Storesund, and Børge Fjordheim, creating music as recent as 2022. Both Kaada and Fjordheim have backgrounds in composing, the former composing for international films, while the latter has contributed to pop acts in Norway. Storesund, on the other hand, is known in Norway as an avant-garde bassist and is additionally the bassist for the band Kaizers Orchestra, which is known for being the first non-black-metal Norwegian band to sing in their native language whilst having fame outside of Scandinavia. Their start in Jazz is especially clear in their early albums as their music integrates a jazz sound with experimentation with the noise and avant-garde. Do the Crawl is their third studio album and, like most of their albums, was under John Erik Kaada's label Kaada Recordings.

This is one of the albums I thrifted when out with my friends and has to be one of my favorite things that I have thrifted in real life. I still remember how much that specific store smelled of herbs and was the only place we came across that night that actually sold CDs. This is one of Cloroform's earlier albums, as previously mentioned being their third, meaning that a lot of the songs show the influence on Jazz on their music. The songs on the album that really stick out to me is 30000 People and Plug because they reminds me a lot of Fantasma by Cornelius, an album produced only 3 years before this one, and the artists probably didn't know each other. I do think that this album is a lot jazzier and doesn't have the Shibuya Kei parts of it that Fantasma does. This may not surprise you as I say this on every review, but I heavily recommend Cloroform to people if they like the experimentalness of current jazz, especially this album (08/17/2024).
