Thoughts About Note-Taking Methods As A College Student

Ok it's back to school season so I've been seeing tiktoks about "stuff you should bring with you to college!!" and like I know what I need by now this is not my first rodeo but it's still entertaining to watch them

But like. Word of advice that comes from my opinion and perspective: always have the option of taking physical, paper notes. I know a lot of people like to get iPads to take notes on, and you definitely should consider investing in a laptop, but there may be a time where your devices are dead or you're unable to use them. Say, for example, your professor may give an open-note quiz but not allow digital notes during it.

Basically what I'm getting at here is don't rely on an iPad for all your note taking even though it's been super trendy to use your iPad and Apple pencil to make fancy notes. It honestly feels like people are telling incoming freshmen that they NEED an iPad but you don't. Use one if you want to, but don't feel like you absolutely need to have one

> Additional advice: if you're thinking to invest in some sort of new Tech for college, prioritize a laptop. Laptops are much more practical for academic things. If you really want a tablet now, perhaps consider one of those 2-in-1 kinda laptops that can be used like a tablet. Please don't let Actual Computers die out the iPads can't take over they can't I Won't let them

Anyway unless you're positive or have something set up so that you can keep your notes entirely digital, it definitely pays to physically hand-write your notes On Paper. Like you could still digitize your notes later, type up or iPad up your hand-written stuff. That might even be Helpful since you'd be going through your notes again.

Digital notes are super convenient be real but like there's pros and cons for both options I think. No hate to anyone who prefers to take notes on an iPad or to type them!! Just sharing my thoughts, definitely use whichever methods you find the most beneficial.

Adding onto this, always prioritise functionality over aesthetics when it comes to notes. Huge fancy titles are useless and a waste of both time and space. You want to have more than three sentences per page. Also, a lot of those "aesthetic notes" accounts on Insta and TikTok actually do really poorly in college. You can definitely make your notes look nice while also being functional, of course, just don't go crazy.

Keep in mind that the purpose of notes isn't to have the textbook or Powerpoint in your handwriting, you should be rephrasing things in ways that make the most sense to you, as well as adding additional information if you need it.

When I was in high school and college, I took notes on my notebook bc:

1.Tablets and other gadgets distract me (and K12 schools here don't allow students to use electronics).

2. My calligraphy is beautiful and I love the feel of the pen on the paper.

3. It helps me remember the lessons better.

4.The use of my Kakashi notebook was mandatory. :>

(note taking is personal and ignore TikTok "tips".)

UGGH I agree so much with this entire post. Plus, taking notes on paper helps me to remember a lot better :/ but the convenience and speed of laptops are DEF irreplaceable. I agree with the "digitize ur paper notes after class" plan, totally smart. I'm actually starting a new term by the end of August so I needed this reminder!! need to get some new notebooks hehe.
