Not a very traditional gangster flick, I can tell you that for free. It carries a unique blend of spontaneous violence, absurd comedy, existential dread, nihilism, and an almost fatalist energy.
The film is both quite funny while simultaneously having an oppressive dread to it all. It jumps from campy scenes on the beach to ones of extreme violence, often parodying each other which feeds into the absurd quality of the film. The disaffected nature of Takeshi's character is what adds the sort of fatalist quality. His character feels always unaffected by his work, he hurts people while going with the flow unto his inevitable end. His calm, unaffected expressions during shootouts combined with him expressing how he's tired of the Yakuza business really hammer home those feelings of ennui, nihilism, and fatalism.
Additionally, the sound score really knocks it outta the park. Just gotta get that out there because its really quite good
You all should watch some Takeshi Kitano films, trust
