My great-aunt started smoking cigarettes as an adolescent. She was so addicted that when she went to the countryside with her family she would go to the outhouse and smoke in there. To hide the smoke she would stick her head just under the waste hole and above all the sewage so you can imagine just how hooked she was. I believe before recently she smoked more than two packs a day. She got breathing problems and had to take inhalers to keep tolerable lung function; nonetheless, she continued smoking. Not long ago she had to be admitted to the hospital for an emergency. I am not sure what it was but she almost died. It hit her so hard that she suddenly stopped smoking altogether. They diagnosed her with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) a lung condition that has no cure and progressively gets worse over time. Cigarettes ruin one's life.
