Oops haven't posted here in a while. Been suppperrr busy with conventions these past few months. I spent so much time prepping for BlerdCon last month and. holy shit yall. That had to be the WORST most DISORGANIZED convention I've ever attended or sold at. It was so fucking chaotic and I never want to experience that again.
I mean jesus christ everything that could have gone wrong with BlerdCon did go wrong/was poorly executed. Vendors paying over a personal Paypal link with no invoice and no receipt? Having only a single volunteer at the check in table? Not having enough exhibitor ribbons to give out? No maps posted anywhere? Barely any security? No parking passes/discounts for exhibitors? Learning about broken Wifi at 1:30AM the morning of? Not being told beforehand there’s no elevators connecting the parking garage to the exhibition rooms? Opening vendor spaces for next year on Saturday at 2pm, aka the busiest time when artists can’t leave their table? FOUR VENDOR HALLS? Are you serious?? I’ve sold at poorly run conventions before, but nothing like what I experienced at BlerdCon.
The attendees I talked to weren’t having the best time either! Multiple times I had attendees walk up to my table to ask me “How do I get out of this room?” or “Where am I?”. The layout of all the rooms was just way too confusing. The programming schedule on the website was 404’ing constantly. The vendor hall I was put in was tabletop gaming the year before, so people kept walking in expecting tabletop gaming & then being confused when there’s a FORTH vendor hall. I cannot stress enough how insane having four vendor halls on completely different floors for a convention is. The whole weekend was so fucking bad. I am NEVER going again. Fuck that.In better convention times, I went to SuperNova in Chantilly, VA last weekend as a regular attendee. Whenever I visit a new convention for a day, it's mostly to scope out the artist alley and see how well people are selling so I can think about applying next year. SuperNova used to be called Super Smash Con until last year, so as you can probably tell, it't mostly a Super Smash Bros tournament/expo. It was really fun! Lots of hype matches and I saw Triforce Quartet live. The whole convention is in one giant expo hall tho so the sound was bouncing EVERYWHERE and it seriously drained the life out of me.
Next convention I'll be selling at is Superstar Anime in Virginia Beach. I've been looking forward to it for monthhhsss cause I've never been to Virginia Beach and the vendor hall closes each day at 5pm, so I'll have plenty of time to explore the boardwalk. I really want to get a shitty tie-dye airbrushed boardwalk shirt lol. It'll be like an actual business trip (which it IS this is going on my taxes for next year).
I MIGHT go to Small Press Expo in Sept. Mostly cause that con has a special place in my heart. It was the first convention I ever went to & it's where I can still meet up with a lot of college friends who will fly in to sell there. We'll see how well I do at Super star Anime tho. Busy year ahead!!
