Chiikawa is a serialized comic started in 2020 by nagano, an artist from Japan with booming success which started in their gag comic "Joke Bear" which is a white bear with a simple face. Although the characters and the world/story seems lively and cute, there is a layer of madness to all of it with the introduction of Monsters and Witches to the story. What's interesting about Chiikawa is that the species of cute creatures within the story are called Chiikawa, not just the protagonist, which is a shortening of the Nankachii Sakute Kawaiiyatsu, which means "Something Small and Cute". All of the characters are thus referred to by their "tribes," for instance, Chiikawa (the character) is of the hamster tribe. Hachiware, Chiikawa's best friend, is part of a tribe that resembles cats but are not (as nagano says that Hachiware can eat chocolates and onions). I was actually a huge fan of Joke Bear before I really cared about Chiikawa because I really liked how funny it was. My friends and I used to trade silly joke bear photos like Pokemon cards on our discord server. I didn't know exactly who my favorite Chiikawa character was until recently finding that it was Hachiware. I like that the Chiikawa characters look very kind, their hearts seem so full of wonder and spirit, it makes me quite joyous honestly. I was actually pleasantly surprised today because the mall I was at has a Chiikawa pop-up, something I thought was only in Hong Kong due to videos I was seeing on Instagram. It wasn't until my mom sent me a picture of the pop-up that I sprinted from the dessert place I was at to get to the mall. I spent 30 minutes there walking around trying to figure out what I wanted before settling on what is shown in the photo. I was most excited about the mousepad because my old one was falling apart, as well as the backpack because it was a little plushie.
