Vkei subgenres

There's lots of blogs that explain vkei subcultures, but I want to make my own, more simple and interesting for newer fans or older.

fyi, this is what I think and the research I put in.

1. Kote kei - Popular during 1980s - 1990's - this substyle is considered a classic or old school vkei.

How do you recognize Kote kei bands? teased/styled hair, accessories..lots of it, has either black or white clothing, glamorous/dramatic clothing.

2. Showa Kayou kei -  Showa is a fashion inspired by the Showa era (1926-89) in Japan when  a lot of western styles and japanese style immerged, besides that it's more focused on pop music during the Showa Period.

How do you recognize Showa kayou kei bands? men's suits or dress shirt, fedoras, roses, in the music it features elements like jazz, enka, and rock and roll.

Some bands that are associated with this style; Anchroclock, Swimmy, and Kikai Ningyou Kagekidan KARAKURI.



3. Tanbi kei - Tanbi is a subgenre of kote kei and many others. Tanbi meaning beauty, is influenced by Renaissance era Europe... as you may know. 

How do you recognize Tanbi Kei? Not only is the style unique but it features Victorian style dresses and suits, a noble like style, usually includes patterns on the dress or suit. 

Some bands that are associated with this style; Malice Mizer, Versailles, D, and Zeke Deux.

4. Osare/Oshare kei - Osare was popularized in the 2000s, this style was a way to self expressing yourself with positivity.

How do you recognize Osare kei? This style is also unique with bright colors and formal wear and also layering, stylize hair, hair is either bright or natural colored hair.
Some bands that are associated with this style; An Cafe, Baroque, Irokui., and Alibi.

5. Soft Visual kei/ sofubi - toned down version of other subgenres of vkei

How do you recognize Soft Visual kei? They usually go for a more natural look, eyeshadow around the eyelids, dark clothing, and natural hair colors.
Some bands that are associated with this style; Angelo, BOUNTY, Janne da Arc, and Glay.

6. Nagoya kei - Created in the early 90's this style well is from the Nagoya region...inspired by western goth, death metal, and punk.

How do you recognize Nagoya kei? Well, og fan and new fans have very different prospective of Nagoya kei. Usually darker, angsty, especially in their music. (I'll show pics!!!)

Some bands that are associated with this style; Lustair, lynch, Merry go round, and Lustknot.

7. Iryou kei - you may see this substyle a lot in bands even for a short time. This style is a hospital/medical theme. 

How to reconize Iryou kei? Hospital wear like lab coats, sometimes a tie and/or a scrub dresses (nurse attire), and occasionally fake stained blood on the clothing.

Some bands that are associated with this style; ZRGN, eversick, lulu, GE+IM, and La'mule.

8. Kirakira kei - Kirakira descended from Osare kei, meaning shiny. 

How to reconize KiraKira? Flashy, striking outfits, bright colors(I've seen dark toned clothing be labeled kirakira idk leave that to the experts or something I'm just here to tell you about different subgenres.), dyed hair or a natural tone.

Some bands that are associated with this style; Shingeki no awake, BANxii, and Aqulociela.


9. Wafuu kei - Japanese style

How to recognize Wafuu kei? Traditional Japanese clothing and instruments.

Some bands associated with this style; ルルノネ(rurunone), ChAiN, Dazzlingbad project, and Jelly.


10. Menhera kei- Menhera is a subgenre focusing around mental health which isn't really talked about in Japan. 

How to recognize Menhera kei? Featuring medical accessories, dark lyrics, fake blood, all black or red and black, and white, also maybe colored hair or natural toned. 

Some bands associated with this style; Zetsumei, Gulu gulu, Lyrica, and Doku.
