social media just sucks. i know its ironic posting this on social media by itself, but give me a minute to explain myself, okay? would it be any mainstream service like twitter, insta, tiktok, whatever. it was designed to keep you the most amount of time in it until you look at the clock and realize its been 2 hours, right? because of that, most algorithms encourage things to show up not only depending on your interests, but the ones that are only made to capture your attention (either in a negative or positive way). and because of that, all that you get is trash that wastes your time, or i may be a schizo who refuses to use social media because the stars told him to, who knows
social media is bad, like really really bad

real!!! gosh, i always feel so drained after spending so much time on my phone. . .
i've loved this site sm because there's no algorithm shoving shit down your throat, and you only interact with things you click on or the people you friend - allowing you to tailor your experience

I am a Schizo and the stars did tell me not to use Instagram. But yeah. Spacehey's cool because there isn't a shitty algorithm attached to it lol. Everyone should revert back to forum-posting and blogging (stuff that requires brain usage to engage with), or no internet at all

There was a period of time during the summer of 2023 where I got very concerned about my privacy and started to chip away at deleting most of my mainstream social media presence save for Discord, as well as actually hardening my browser and starting to use privacy frontends where I still did need to use a mainstream service, and as someone who struggles with mental illness and has gotten sucked into various holes of content I hate that just lost me hours of my time a week, cutting that notion of the algorithm almost completely out of my life has been a legitimate burden taken off of my shoulders. It is no panacea that will solve everything for everyone and I still do spend a lot of my time on these services, but my personal move away from the mainstream to services like the fediverse/Cohost (and even this site to a lesser extent as I'm rarely active here) and starting to use privacy frontends (Invidious mainly, which is really the only mainstream social media I still depend on) has done wonders for my mental and I think it's worth looking into

Twitter is the one I've mainly used in the last decade and it has turned me away. Its so unfocused and will show you the most disturbing video clips you never asked for. Kinda happy to just be chillin' on Spacehey while it lasts ^_^ and all the cool people I used to tweet with left long ago.
Myspace was actually the first social media I used back in its prime, so its homey.

Yes, this! I pretty much switched to only using Tumblr because of this because it's like the only "social media" site where you can both easily find what you *want* to see and avoid what you don't, because you can opt out of the algorithm, and not get caught doomscrolling.

I am getting closer and closer to stopping using Twitter because of the insufferable Temu ads legit every 2 tweets. Then there's Insta keeps pushing ads, overconsumption influencers, and unrelated suggested content I never asked for that still pops up after I disabled the suggestion. My Insta art account discovery page is flooded with stupid AI garbage regarding me blocking tons of them.
Luckily I never have a Tiktok account to rot my brain even further.
It's low-key sad that I grew up using them, but now they have all turned into ad platforms.
I talk in more general terms with my own comment but I will mention my experiences with Twitter here because it wasn't even just the shit ads I was getting but how often something absolutely depressing or actual content slop was boosted onto my feed for Literally No Reason. Any time I was linked a Twitter post elsewhere I would spend the next 30 minutes scrolling through posts that were not only worthless but probably actively bad for me. The Elon Musk buyout ended up in part being a wake-up call for me and eventually led to me deleting my Twitter a year ago; from there, I found my place elsewhere on the internet and never looked back, and I have been so much better for it. My motivations are primarily privacy leaning but the side effects of my mental state being considerably better when browsing has made it all the more worth it

i feel kinda sad for kids growing up with tiktok and youtube shorts and all thinking the weird ai videos are real and being glued to an ipad for 7 hours a day like kid just go outside and throw a stick, play football, figure out how to climb a tree
the gen alpha problem is mainly behind all the generations that are creating content for them and their parents, they're just stupid impressionable kids after all, as long as it gives serotonin they'll do it

yeah i honestly blame the parents. If you want children you need to take care of them and not turn the television on as soon as they say they’re bored. Plus these kids grow up with parents just staring at a phone or laptop for most of the day, at least in my experience because i got two little brothers (one is 4 and the other is like 1 month old) and i swear my parents have more screen time then me, my mum works a lot from her laptop too and my dad just likes phone games. No wonder my brother wants to do that too instead of drawing a picture
