After updating the chipset and graphics drivers, as well as the Java Runtime Environment, I could finally run Minecraft at a stable 30 FPS (40 FPS max with Optifine and 50 while looking at the sky). The version chosen was Beta 1.7.3

It still has some rendering issues, particularly in the Nether, but it is still playable.
I also tried connecting to a server. Apparently, the performance is better on servers since less CPU is being used by the client's machine. Here you have some pictures of an (unfinnished) construction I made.

More things about this machine are reserved for a future blog entry, I only wanted to share this. See you next time, stay tuned.

Hella nice! I first played Minecraft on Athlon 2800+ and ATI Radeon 9800 SE, 512 MB of ram
My PC was super outdated back in 2010/2011 but I still managed to run mc on like 20-60 fps depending If i had Fullscreen or not
Which version were you playing on? It would be interesting to test the performance of other MC versions :P
