What kind of guy is he? if you know him well or are friends with him maybe it'd be easier to approach the subject :D
i used to know him in elementary school but like idk him much now but like hes a grade above me but were the same age and i have no idea how to even ask him to be my friend in the first place

It might sounds corny but it's the best I can think of rn... have you tried approaching him and asking if he remembered you from kinder? Even if he says no it could be a good conersation starter just to ask him simple questions and stuff to ease out the tension.
