Hey, adult fresh out of high school here! Hope you'll enjoy your high school experience. :] As for not embarrassing yourself... if you're not running around the school yelling, I think you'll mostly be fine, haha.

it's been great, actually! my middle school was rough because the student body was just drug dealers and close minded people, which made it hard to make friends as an out trans guy, but here everyone is very friendly and acceptingร the workload is much heavier, but i really like the work and like most of my teachers a lot. so far, i'm building healthy study habits, so hopefully i do much better with grades this year too. overall, super positive experience

I was a freshman last year so here are some things I did.
In math ABUSE THE USE OF YOUR CALCULATOR trust me most people didn't do this and it made math so much easier. (but make sure you still understand the topic) I used the Ti-30XS multiView Texas instruments calculator and it was a big help. It has a way you can 'graph' (it writes out a table for you) without it being counted as a graphing calculator and it was so helpful i recommend getting it if you can.
When I started I was SCARED of the upperclassmen and older people but don't worry they are just human like you. I think the most scary thing was the fact that they were older but it will pass with time.
This might be something you learned in middle school but don't carry around a big binder it just adds more weight to what you need to carry and can be annoying at times. Just bring what your need I recommend bringing one folder for before lunch periods and one folder for after lunch periods.
Be good to your teachers. i don't know if you are they type to be rude to teachers but try and be nice to them. Being in a class with a Junior (it was a freshman science class) it was horrable having to deal with him being rude to the teacher all of the time.
Again I don't know if your this type of person but don't try to spread gossip or talk rudely about people it really gets you no where and it can hurt the person if they find out about it (stuff spreads fast in high school) And don't hook up with junior or seniors.
This is around the time when peoples mental health goes down so if you ever hear about someone doing bad things to themselves PLEASE TELL A TRUSTED ADULT AND TALK TO THEM. Also another thing that went down at my school was gossip about someone 'harming themselves for attention' People don't just harm themselves for attention there is always going to be bad thoughts and other things going into that. so if those rumors go around try and stop it. it can harm the person more.
Just overall don't over work yourself. It is okay to relax. If you are ever feeling burnt out just take a break and do something you enjoy.
oh also beware for the romio and juliet unit in english

Another tip is try not to use the 'Sigma' or 'brain rot' talk in high school. it can make you look kiddish and could make the upperclassmen not like you as much
(I don't want this to make you feel scared of the upperclassmen its just that terminology can be seen as 'middle school stuff' and I just want to save you embarrassment you will feel now or later in life) (I also don't know how this is taken in your school but it was seen in not good light at mine)

Hey! I'm 18 years old and recently graduated high school. I totally get the anxiety you're feeling! I started my freshman year behind a computer because COVID hit and we couldn't go back to school just yet. When we were able to go in person, I was SO lost. It was embarrassing due to how far into the school year it already was. Although I wasn't that person, some of my peers didn't even physically go to high school until their sophomore year, so they were even more lost than I was! But don't worry, everyone is in the same boat as you! You can always ask teachers around for help as well. With the grades part, make sure to complete your work as soon as you get it. You shouldn't procrastinate on finishing it. I had, and still have, a huge procrastination problem. Do. Not. Procrastinate! As long as you do all of your work, your grades should be just fine! Try not to get distracted with what's on your phone. I recommend keeping your phone in your backpack until you're done with all your work for the class, just a little discipline. The stress of procrastinating is not worth it! Additional advise: Make high school worth while! Go out with friends, talk to new people, join extracurriculars, etc.! It seems like you've already done that with the program you're in which is great! You'll be okay in high school. There will be very stressful moments but it's not anything you can't overcome! You got this! :D

thank you SO much!! my main issue is procrastination, so it's a big focus of mine not to do that this year. i'm hoping i can start on a clean slate. I appreciare the advice a ton!!!
(btw, its so crazy that covid was that long ago i was in fourth grade dude)

Procrastination can punch you in the face HARD, especially when you're drained out of energy. I recommend prioritizing at least one hour of study time a day. If that's too difficult, try doing 20 minutes and work your way up each week. If you're trying to memorize certain things for an upcoming test, I recommend looking over the words/equations (or whatever else) every day every few hours. This is proven to help you memorize more than studying the night before a test. One more piece of advice, SLEEP!!! Do not stay up studying. You have a higher chance of forgetting everything you studied for the night before. Prioritize your overall mental and physical health. Very, very important! (Also, I know! COVID feels just like yesterday that it's crazy how long it really has been.)
