(diabetic) summer camp!

Hello,

It's been a while since my last post.. that's because I've been away for two weeks at d-camp! (Diabetes camp).

I've been going to summer camps every summer, even before the diabetes diagnosis, and it was nice to go to one this summer too. I was in the leadership training group, which means we were taught how to be counsellors!!

I was cut off from internet while there, but it was so worth it. I was the newest diagnosis out of everyone else in the cabin, the second newest was 3-years diabetic (compared to me, 10-months diabetic..). It was so helpful and informative to talk to the others who've had diabetes for 10+ years--which was most of the others. There was a lot to learn.

One of the biggest things is I've learned more about the different kinds of pumps I could pick, and since leaving camp I'm set on the Tandem t:slim. It looks pretty cute too, along with the benefits of the close-loop.

ANYWAYS. It was nice to be surrounded with diabetics, where I don't need to explain, and I don't get looks for having to inject before eating, and everyone around me was doing nearly the same amount of math to eat food as I was.

The activities were fun too. On the weekend we went on this giant hike and actually I really liked it. There was also the giant swing, the pool, and all the evening activities were fun (campfire, camp clue, and capture the pump were my favs :3)

And, there were PLACEMENTS! \(〇_o)/
It was pretty nerve-wracking. We were put with a cabin for two days. I was placed with the 10-12 year-olds, and actually it went pretty well. I had the BEST counsellors ever and the kids were all super chill. There was this one kid afraid of heights, and I encouraged him to come up the giant swing with me, and he talked to me about one piece. Another girl was a cheerleader, and she and I did this climbing activity together (she was WAY more agile than me lol!!!).

All in all, except for a few moments, I had a great time at camp, and now I have more diabetic friends I can turn to for help! I would recommend any diabetic of any age should look for a d-camp in their area :]
