A Dream That Weaps Only Tears

Walking through the front door of my home, sounds of laughter and variant pitches of voices coat the air as if noise never dissipates. To my curiosity I find myself in the dining room painted in vibrant colors matching the dark walnut dining arrangement and crystal chandelier that gradually picks up momentum overhead of an old familiar. A family gathering. The food is elaborate, staged as if were out of one of the finest magazines.

I overhear my name being repeatedly called in the distance, scrambling around the household to no avail of reaching the destination of where the voice calls me from. Although it's close, I am never within reach.

A silence pours into the atmosphere, shortly after met by a dog growling from the kitchen. The same voice appears, and I follow back into the kitchen... It is dinner-time, the bells are ringing, the same old-familiar song of voices chime together as everyone bustles to seat themselves.

One seat left, the head of the table, I assume my position. Hand in hand with all those gathered, a sense of profound love and cherishment arises in my core. Glasses are raised to adorn a moment I am not akin to, I get up to find and fill my cup.

As I look back, the space is empty. I close my eyes for a brief moment to hear the call of my name again. As I open my eyes, everyone is back in their places, alive and well, but the set is ablaze and no one is none the wiser.

I rush to pat out the flames on my mother, then father, but nothing works. With all the force and might of myself, I am unable to stop what is set in motion. The fire spreads, attaching itself to our family household. The engulf of what lies ahead, I walk backwards to trip over my puppy. Raven. I pick her up and head for the door only to burn my hands, unable to escape. I look for windows only to see bars, and no way out.

Sitting on the stairs, holding Raven so carefully to shield her from what awaits. I close my eyes to sing her a lullaby as the air becomes hard to breathe.

What feels like forever, I open my eyes to assume the end of my mortality. Confused. Unscathed by what reaped the family home. Mother and Father are still eating dinner, ablaze met by a burnt down home.

I tell myself this isn't happening, that this is not real. I am comforted by hands of my mother, brought up and held with the most bliss. The hug as if eternal. She expresses to meet her in the garden with tea, and as I look around, the house is as good at new. I comply to her wishes, meeting her shortly after.

Turning to the garden, I await for her, carrying Raven with me. Again I hear the voice, turns out it's my mother. Calling for me in such a sweet tune. I place Raven on the patio, she begins to run down the driveway, airing me to run after her. My mothers voice grows louder, as if beside me. Conflicted, I lose sight unable to find neither my mother or Raven. Only then after running so long I realize there are no people around.

As the seasons change, my walking remained the same, unavoidable, in the absence of life. There was... Nothing. Only faint memories and voices of things no longer.

I am truly alone, and what may be forever.
