"Do I need this?"
A question many have asked when looking to buy something. But not me. Never Me.
About 2 months ago I was at a thrift store and found this:
That's right, an 8-track player.
Funny enough, the first time I was there, I didn't even buy it. I just couldn't tell if it worked. But, in case the photo didn't give it away, that changed. I went back before the end of the week just to donate some items. Now, this thrift store gives you some coupons for donating, and, in what was probably the greatest moment of weakness in my life, I walked my dumb ass into that store and used my coupon on an un-tested 8-track player. The damage: $6. I went home, tried it, anddd, it didn't work. None of the indicators lit up and I couldn't hear it making a damn noise. so, I just put it on the back burner and figured maybe I would tinker with it later. and that's where I thought the story would end.
I love thrifting, but it brings out my worst trait, the idea that. "I can fix him"
I have so much old shit from thrift stores and the recycling center, mostly old computers, and with most of them, I have a simple saying. if you know it, say it with me...
So I expected to just basically forget about it until the next time I clean.
But...
That changed today
I was at an antique shop and found this:
I have literally no attachment to this movie, never seen it. I've never even smoked weed... for now. But it was only 3 dollars, and it solved the biggest problem I had with owning an 8-track player: not owning any 8-track tapes (or cartridges, whichever name you prefer for your obsolete music storage medium). So along with some other fun stuff (lead paint Garfield mug and Islanders pennant) I bought the tape. And to my surprise, the tape player works.
I might be stupid
It didn't have an on/off button, why the fuck would it work without a tape? So, yeah, I have a working 8-track player. It's also a recorder, which my parents didn't even think existed when I told them about it.
So now I have a new mission
I think it would be fun to collect 8-tracks. I've always had a soft spot for 70s easy listening. And 8-tracks even lasted long enough for some early to mid-80s albums to get released on it. So hopefully I can give you guys an update on an 8-track collection.
The funniest tape in my mind would be Tubular Bells because I don't even know it would fit on just 4 programs.
Let me know what you guys think. Maybe give me some funny/good tape recommendations.
P.S
Here's My Hi-Fi setup
Receiver: JVC RX-111
Tape deck: Fisher CR-W9115
8-track player/recorder: ICP 885 (I couldn't find a single picture of this tape player on-line)
CD Player: Sony CDP-CX100
Still need to buy a good turntable for my records. I have one of those crappy amazon turntables and it sucks and I hate it and I want to blow it up with my mind, so I'm holding out for a good thrift find.
Thanks for Reading :)
