Made a skirt for my friend's birthday

they've been wanting something similar for a while so i took it upon myself to make it a reality

this is the first item of clothing i have made entirely from scratch and i'm pretty happy with how it went!  it's made from a checkered shirt and a black dress i found for cheap at various charity shops.  i tried to get the main features of the shirt in there, namely the buttons to actually do the skirt up and parts of the cuffs became the belt loops.  i was going to use the shirt pocket but i couldn't get it looking right - and my friend's a bag person anyways!
