Zenitsu Agatsuma’s Haori

Zenitsu Agatsuma's haori, adorned with yellow and white triangles, is not just a striking visual element but also steeped in hidden symbolism.聽

The pattern of triangles on his haori is actually known as "urokomon," and it鈥檚 a traditional Japanese design that resembles fish scales. Historically, urokomon was believed to offer protection against evil spirits and curses. This symbolism aligns perfectly with Zenitsu's naturally anxious and fearful disposition, as if the haori itself provides him with a sense of security amidst the dangers he faces as a Demon Slayer.

The choice of color for Zenitsu's haori is also noteworthy. The bright yellow is likely a nod to his similarly colored hair, which became yellow after being struck by lightning, futhermore with the theme of his breathing style, which is also lightning. This connection adds an extra layer of depth to his character, merging his appearance and personality traits into a cohesive whole.

Interestingly, in Japan, the phrase "yellow voice" is used to describe the high-pitched voices of women and children鈥擨 doubt this was taken into considertion when designing his haori, but its still funny to think about.

In Episode 17 of *Demon Slayer*, a flashback reveals Zenitsu without his haori before he meets his mentor, dubbed by Zenitsu as "Gramps." After their meeting, Zenitsu is seen wearing the urokomon-patterned haori, strongly suggesting that Gramps gave it to him. This detail adds a deeper emotional layer to the garment's significance. It wasn't merely that Zenitsu sought protection; rather, it was Gramps who wanted to protect him. Gramps himself wore a haori with the urokomon pattern, indicating his belief in its protective powers.

An interesting contrast is seen with another of Gramps' students, Kaigaku, who does not wear a haori with the urokomon pattern. Whether this is because Kaigaku refused it or Gramps chose not to give him one is unclear, but it highlights the special bond between Zenitsu and his mentor.

Moreover, Gramps was the former Hashira of Lightning Breathing, which adds another layer of significance to the yellow color of Zenitsu's haori. It suggests that Gramps saw potential in Zenitsu as his successor, honoring him with a garment that signifies their shared connection to lightning. While there's no direct evidence that Gramps gifted Zenitsu the haori- it could very well be that Zenitsu admired him so much he himself got a haori similar to Gramps, the idea of Gramps buying it's a comforting thought that I鈥檇 like to believe as true.

In essence, Zenitsu's haori is a multifaceted symbol in Demon Slayer. It reflects his need for protection, his mentor's care, and the legacy of Lightning Breathing. I fear his haori may also have jinxed him into acquiring yellow hair, because yellow hair is fucking sick bro.
