"you don't have to dress __ to be __, as long as you listen to the music!"

Fashion is a huge part in alternative subcultures, and although for most subcultures it's also about the music, it's not just those two. It's also about literature, politics, media and whatnot. For example, you can't call yourself a goth or punk or whatever while also being conservative. That just completely goes against everything those subcultures are oparte na on.

Secondly, in some subcultures it is based off of fashion, such as Gyaru i scene. Scene is i always have been a fashion based subculture, nie exactly music they listen to. In the 2000s it was an insult used to those wanting to be in the scene with not listening to the music. The entire subculture of it is based on fashion nie nuty.

You've got a point with punk. Progressive ideals are at the core of the punk ethos... But goth? Goth is mostly based around music, a love of the macabre, gothic literature and an optional inclination towards dark aesthetics. Why would it be contradictory for someone to be goth and also a conservative? I just don't see it

Its true that fashion is a big part of most subcultures if not all of them, but it's also not THAT necessary. Some people might not want to make such a big commitment but listen to the music and share the same beliefs/politics to be a punk/goth/whatever else. What I see most of these days are kids only dressing as the subculture and knowing nothing behind it. (I'm not saying it's not ideal or that it's not a part of the culture but that even only small changes could make a difference and not the whole look.)
