Hi everyone !!
As a goth, the subculture is built on thrifting and DIY-ing your clothes. I see this slowly disappearing since a lot of people don't want to do it anymore either because they think they can't or because of laziness. Well I wanted to show that making cute clothes doesn't have to be hard !
So here's my step by step tutorial on how to make a cute skirt out of some pants!
Time: 3.5 hours (with sewing machine)
Difficulty 3/5
⋆꙳•̩̩͙❅*̩̩͙‧͙ ‧͙*̩̩͙❆ ͙͛ ˚₊⋆⋆꙳•̩̩͙❅*̩̩͙‧͙ ‧͙*̩̩͙❆ ͙͛ ˚₊⋆⋆꙳•̩̩͙❅*̩̩͙‧͙ ‧͙*̩̩͙❆ ͙͛ ˚₊⋆⋆꙳•̩̩͙❅*̩̩͙‧͙ ‧͙*̩̩͙❆ ͙͛ ˚₊⋆⋆꙳•̩̩͙❅*̩̩͙‧͙ ‧͙*̩̩͙❆ ͙͛ ˚₊⋆
First off, start with cutting off the leg pieces of your pants
here is the before. I recommend using chalk to mark where you're going to cut and pinning down the front and back parts of the pants so it doesn't shift or move while you cut. I edited the photo to show where I cut because the lighting made it hard to see
(after)
You basically already have a skirt, but if you want to make it more unique or impressive-looking, keep reading !
This part is OPTIONAL, but here is where I cut again because I wanted mine to be shorter. After you cut the leg pieces you have more freedom to change up the length and make it as short as you want. This is the BEST time to do that.
PRO TIP: make sure to cut around a 1/2 inch lower than you mark it so that when you hem the skirt it because your perfect desired length
Example of cutting below for hemming. The pins are there to pin the front and back pieces together so they don't shift or move during this process and make your project uneven.
Here is what it looked like after I cut again. The next step is to hem the bottom.
This is what the hemming should look like when you prepare it. Once your done hemming all the next steps are optional because they will be about adding pleats to the bottom of your skirt. If you don't want any pleats and you're happy about your skirt congratulations you finished !!
(sorry for the random diagram, I wasn't able to upload a photo of me doing this)
In order to make the pleats, you need the leg pieces of your original pants again. Cut a long straight rectangle. This part may seem kinda confusing but the width of the rectangle becomes added length to the bottom of your skirt. We will make pleats out of the rectangle so depending on how much fabric you need you may need to cut multiple rectangles and sew them together.
***MAKE SURE TO HEM ONE SIDE OF THE LENGTH OF YOUR RECTANGLE. THIS WILL BECOME THE BOTTOM OF YOUR PLEATS
we will make our pleats using the fork method, so grab a fork from the kitchen (preferably one that isn't super curved) and we can start
PRO TIP: the bigger the fork, the bigger the pleats. Decide if you want smaller of larger pleats and pick your fork based on your preferences
step one of the fork method. Insert your fork like this away from the end of your fabric
fold the fork on it's backside towards the end of the rectangle.
Take your fork out, push and adjust it (the fabric) flat and pin your pleat down.
Congrats !! you finished your first pleat !!
now you just have to continue these last 3 steps until it's enough to wrap around the entire bottom of your skirt (during this process you might need to cut and add more rectangles)
**MAKE SURE YOUR HEMMING IS AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR PLEATS
Once you're done, sew the down and they should look somewhat like this
Now the last thing you need to do is sew the pleats onto your main skirt piece
Ta da !! here is what the finished piece should look somewhat like !!
Congratulations on finishing !!
I hope this was helpful to learn and to hopefully provide some inspiration for people in need of a new project or who want to learn sewing. Now you can look at pants with a whole new lens and creative ability !
Thanks for reading !!

If you want you can try to thrift some for cheap or use old ones you don't wear anymore ! That's the best way to learn and practice !!

Just a quick question: what if, instead of pleats, I wanted to make a layered skirt? How would I go about that and adding ruffles (i think that's what they're called) for texture? (Cause I think we can all agree that would be more intresting)

Hmm I’ve never made a skirt with layers before but I can try to do that in the future and post another tutorial. I wouldn’t know how to explain it without doing it first. And as for ruffles, it really depends how ruffled you want it to be, as more ruffles = more fabric to cut but I can try to show that as well. Thanks for the idea

As someone that does do fashion design and sewing, reusing your old clothes or getting old clothes from the thrift to make new things is one of the best ways to start ! Good luck !
