PREFACE:
Lately, I've noticed a certain phenomenon on the internet, and this phenomenon has led to my groundbreaking scientific hypothesis "The Shitshow of the Week" which is sure to win me a Nobel Peace Prize and a shitload of big booty bitches swarming me as a result my world-changing discovery.
THE HYPOTHESIS:
The "Shitshow of the Week" hypothesis is as simple as this: sometime every week, it seems that the greater internet, primarily social media such as Twitter and TikTok, go absolutely batshit over some event that happened that week. Recent examples include:
- the attempted assassination of Donald Trump
- the Crowdstrike bug which took out millions of Windows computers worldwide, causing billions of dollars in damage to many important infrastructures the world over (just use Linux, dumbasses)
- the 2024 Summer Olympic games in Paris (some religious weirdos mistook a reenactment of the Greek feast of Dionysis as being a blasphemous interpretation of the Last Supper of Jesus and got offended by it, not further helped by a dramatic reenactment of the French Revolution featuring French metal band Gojira being interpreted as Satanic (can we PLEASE let the Satanic metalhead stereotype die already?!)).
Regardless of your opinions on any of these events, it's pretty agreeable that these events get blown way out of proportion by everyone online, turning certain parts of the internet (namely Twitter) into an absolute shitshow (hence the name) for the next few days until the next dumb thing happens that starts the cycle all over again. When the next major thing happens, most people just forget the last event and start arguing about this new thing.
WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT:
It's pretty much guaranteed that not everyone's just going to completely break this cycle (that's asking too much of the zombies on Twitter), but at the very least, the less braindead among us (ඞ) should try to distance ourselves from all the pointless arguing over events that usually have no effect on our lives.
