Adolescence of Utena

Spoilerish, maybe ? So ! just finished Adolescence of Utena, the movie interpretation of RGU . it was honestly amazing ! I personally reccomend the series or manga first, its not necessary but it helps make sense of some of the wild stuff . Nothing, however, can prepare you for Utena car, methinkz .

I interpreted the message a bit differently from the anime . While they both have the same core themes of escaping abuse and the patriarchy, I feel like the movie sorta leans much further into a theme of escaping your own guilt--specifically by refusing to give in to the crushing, dreaded embrace of escapism . You can not explain away messy actions for yourself or (espescially, in this case) those who hurt you, you need to move on and grow .

Ohtori Academy makes an interesting metaphor for escapism . The idea that you are dead, and yet still living . You do not grow and you do not move on, and the movies focus on adolescence and school days makes that clear--trapping yourself in a "simpler time" in a way . I feel like the symbolism for this is definitely more overt, which makes sense, considering the fact that they had 2 fit everything abt the story into a movie rather than a show . If it werent for how downright absurd the movie is, I'd suggest it for a first introduction, but honestly i think building yourself up 2 it is a better choice lolz :3

overall, great movie ! loved it lotz !!

I just finished the movie a couple of hours ago, I can't wait to rewatch that visual masterpiece soon. I was wondering throughout the movie whether or not it is ever necessary to watch the anime beforehand, I think it is, in my perspective, I find the movie as a parallel lens to the essential story, more of a complimentary sequence, take Touga as an example, we don't see much of him, we can't tell whether or not he's the prince, as well as Dios's appearance, I don't think a clueless movie-only watcher would conclude that he is the prince that Utena longs for. However I find it unnecessary, to put spotlight on the prince, Dios, or any side character that helped Utena's development in the series, the essence manifests in Anthy, her decisions and her realization that she has to, as well as Utena, revolutionize the world.

i mean, i think the differences between touga and akio are mostly due to the varying plots . the movie and anime are extremely similar and follow mmmost of the same major points, but tougas role is slightly different, and im not sure akio being utenas prince was ever a thing that was mentioned or alluded to during the movie . the closesstt i can think of is the scene where she is, in anthys eyes, princely as dios, but thats more anthy making that association than a personal connection between akio and utena . but perhaps im misinterpreting ? its like 1 am sorz lol

exactly, the plots are not identical, they are similar. it's a matter of visual field, in the anime we get to see a bit of all of them, all the characters, in the anime we are focusing on anthy, I don't think Utena has gotten enough development, unlike what we thoroughly witnessed all over the series. Akio was not highlighted as Dios, i find it clear merely because i have watched the series. I wonder what conclusion one might come up if they only watched the movie.
