It’s a quiet evening, the night sky is dark and the few stars in it are scattered worse than Qiu’s brain. They breathe in, and Aaron does too. They aren’t sure what's actually wrong but they can tell something isn’t right. Nothing has been right with either of them in a while.
The crickets chirp more than the birds ever do, and the wind blows gently against their faces as they lay together atop the creaky old rotting roof of Qiu’s old hideout. It’s where they had met each other, and it’s where they go more often than their own homes.
“It technically is your house Qiu” they can hear the imaginary Aaron in their head say, “It’s in your backyard after all.” The version that Qiu has of Aaron in their head is much happier than the one lying next to them.
Autumn doesn’t really need Aaron to be a happy person to enjoy spending time with him, they never have, it just hurts worse to watch their best friend suffer at his own hands almost daily. More like his own mind.
They look over at Aaron, who’s laying on the right of them. His brown eyes are tired and hazy, not in a way they should be at fourteen. His black hair is messy, and the earmuffs on his head are doing nothing to tame it, or keep him warm for a matter of fact.
Aaron Sterfon is a mess, and it’s the most obvious thing in the world- so how come it feels like only Qiu notices it?
He had once promised to actually go to Qiu if something was wrong, but that just felt like one that was broken a long time ago. Autumn’s nervous, Autumn is scared, but they ask anyway because they know if they don’t, it might get worse.
Qiu broke the silence with a soft voice, "Is everything okay, Aaron?" They continued to look at the sky, not wanting to come across as pushy—they knew he hated that.
Aaron doesn't turn to them either, but Qiu hears him breath in heavily before answers, "I don't know"
Qiu's heart sank at those words. They turned their gaze from the night sky to look at Aaron. He didn't seem like himself. Normally, he was reserved, but not to this extent.
"You don't know?" Qiu repeated, their voice soft. "Is there anything specific that's been bothering you, or...?"
He stays silent for a moment, not sure of how to answer, but when he responds he ends up asking a question. "Qiu, do you think I'm a.. good person?" He asks quietly, it's not exactly an answer to Qiu's question, but it gives them an idea of what might be going through Aaron's head.
This question surprised Qiu. They weren't used to hearing such vulnerability in Aaron's voice. They paused for a moment, taking in the question, then turned to look at him.
"Of course you are," they said softly. "You're kind, and... you're definitely a good person." They hesitated for a second, feeling like something was off, "Do you think that you’re not?"
