the digital dark age and lost media [and why i keep cds around]

so if you know me personally you know i'm very afraid of losing digital media. lots of it is very sentimental to me and i'd probably be very distressed if i lost a playlist i cared about a lot or even a minute long video. i have every system album on cd and some on vinyl, 5 kmfdm albums on cd, every picture or video from my trips is on cd, and so on. what i've noticed is that no matter how much technology evolves, there will be something that can still read cd or dvd format. hopefully this persists well into the future but in the chance that everything goes digital i'm still keeping the cds. anything can go wrong at any moment, especially in the digital world - minor mistakes have led to entire digital libraries being destroyed and becoming lost media. this also applies to physical media [hence why ~70% of silent films are considered to be lost], but it takes more than a click to get rid of physical media.

i tend to buy cds in bulk for this reason. most of the media i consume i put onto cds, i also keep them in some sort of digital drive in case the cds get damaged, so i can do it all over again, or vice versa. i'm extra careful with my media, because even if i distrust digital drives and such i will still utilize them in case physical drives fail

i'm definitely a little bit of a digital hoarder but this is out of my own schizo paranoia that i will lose everything, especially important or sentimental things. pls preserve your media but do not be extreme with it to the point where it drives you broke

edit: YES I KNOW DISC ROT IS REAL!!! i plan to replace discs or transfer data after 5-20 years depending on the disc format
