The internet is a vast and diverse place, much like a sprawling city. And just like any city, it has its safe neighborhoods and its dangerous ones. While websites like 4chan might be controversial due to the content they host and the discussions they facilitate, there are far more dangerous and illegal places on the internet that we need to be aware of.
The Darknet and Deep Web
Imagine parts of the internet that are intentionally hidden, like a secret alleyway in a city. These areas, known as the Darknet or Deep Web, often host illegal activities, such as drug trafficking, illegal weapons sales, child exploitation, and other criminal activities. It’s important to stay away from these areas, not just because they’re illegal, but because they can also be dangerous.
Scam Websites
Just as there are con artists in real life, there are many websites designed to trick people into giving away their personal information or money. These sites might look legitimate, but they’re actually scams. Learning how to identify these sites is crucial to protect oneself.
Malware Sites
Some websites can automatically download harmful software onto your device without your knowledge. This software can steal your personal information, damage your device, or use it to attack others.
Pro-Suicide Sites
There are sites on the internet that promote suicide, These sites often provide advice on methods for committing suicide and even offer mail-order “suicide kits”. They can be extremely harmful, especially to vulnerable individuals who may be struggling with mental health issues. It’s crucial to report these sites and seek help if you or someone you know is feeling suicidal.
Controversial Communities: Encyclopedia Dramatica
Encyclopedia Dramatica is an online community that often hosts offensive and crude content. While it may present itself as satirical or humorous, it often crosses the line into offensive and harmful content. This can be particularly damaging for younger internet users who may not fully understand the context or intent behind the content.

ehhh i don't know, i've lurked on 4chan and had friends there actively post and pretty much nothing good ever came out of that site except long dead memes by this point

I've dipped my toes into 4chan, while a lot of awful people are there, it's otherwise very chill, especially back then. My advice? AVOID /pol/ WITH YOUR LIFE

Its just like anywebsite with little to no moderation, theres gonna be good and bad stuff but still 4chan was supoosed to just be a place for the niche otakus and subcultures but the weirdos from those communities brought other weirdos from the outside and the whole thing just snowballed from there now being knowned in the mainstream as a "Neet, troll and nsfw" website

so weird it became what it was from a port over of 2chan, the anime forum board exclusive to japan.
The concept of 4chan is great, but the way people use it ehhhh 50/50.

can i be really pedantic and point out that the darknet and deep web arent interchangable terms
the deep web is arguably larger than both the dark web and surface web, and it contains all information that isnt indexed through search engines. this means that the deep web is largely made up of paywalled content, password-protected websites and subscription services.
the dark web is technically a part of the deep web, but its only a small part of what it actually consists of. 'dark web' websites are IP addresses only accessible through certain browsers (most famously Tor).

other things being bad don't make 4chan good, like what is your point?
My point is 4chan has different boards and if you are just going to go to /b/ or /pol/ and not check out the other boards that have to do with sports or art or video games or cooking or whatever then you don't really know the site as a whole and probably only seen the bad stuff on it and just listen to what the news says about it. 4chan, like any other site, has good and bad parts. It’s not perfect, but it’s not the worst either.
