I recently spawned a new world in single-player Minecraft. Everything seemed normal as I began chopping down trees and crafting a workbench. Suddenly, I noticed something moving in the thick fog. My computer is slow, so I have to play with a tiny render distance. I thought it was a cow and decided to follow it, hoping to gather some leather for armor.
But it wasnât a cow. Looking back at me was another character with the default skin, but his eyes were empty. No name tag appeared, and I double-checked to ensure I wasnât in multiplayer mode. He didnât linger; he glanced at me briefly before vanishing into the fog. Intrigued, I chased after him, but he had already disappeared.
I continued playing, puzzled by the encounter. As I explored further, I noticed strange things that didnât seem like they were randomly generated: 2Ă2 tunnels in the rocks, small perfect sand pyramids in the ocean, and groves of trees with all their leaves removed. I often thought I saw the mysterious âplayerâ in the fog, but I never got a clear view. I tried increasing my render distance whenever I thought I saw him, but it didnât help.
I saved the game and went to the forums to see if anyone else had experienced this. No one had. I posted about the encounter, asking if anyone had seen something similar. My post was deleted within minutes. I tried again, but the topic was removed even faster. Then, I received a PM from a user named âHerobrineâ with one word: âStop.â When I tried to view Herobrineâs profile, it returned a 404 error.
Later, I got an email from another forum user. He claimed the moderators could read forum messages, so we were safer using email. The emailer said he had also seen the mystery player and had a small group of other users who had encountered him as well. Their worlds were filled with man-made structures too, and they described the mystery player as having no pupils.
A month passed before I heard from my informant again. Some of the people who had encountered the mystery man had investigated the name Herobrine and found it was often used by a Swedish gamer. After more digging, it was revealed that Herobrine was the brother of Notch, the gameâs developer. I emailed Notch and asked if he had a brother. It took a while, but he eventually replied with a short message:
"I did, but he is no longer with us."
â Notch
Since that initial encounter, I havenât seen the mystery man again, and I havenât noticed any changes to the world beyond my own. However, I managed to press âprint screenâ when I first saw him.
HEROBRINE IS REAL. GO TO SLEEP.
