Hey Spaces sleepers (45): Taiwanese Ice

My last trip to Taiwan was when I was in 7th or 8th grade. It was after my great grandmother passed but before my maternal grandmother had. At the time, I hadn't known that it was the last time that I would see my grandmother and there's a part of me that still aches over that, though this pain is more my mother's than mine as she couldn't go herself to visit before it happened. I remember waving goodbye before going with my mother to go for taiwanese ices once, riding on the back of my mom's scooter as we made our way through the city to the place that sold a huge plate of ice that we shared, watching Adventure Time with Taiwanese subtitles on the TV at the shaved ice place.

Today I found a place on Vernon Boulevard (Queens, NY) that sells Taiwanese ices. They let you pick four toppings and it all comes out to about $10, which is cheaper than most places in New York, but still not as cheap as in Taiwan, nor as large. It was the first time in a while that I got a 4 topping one but they didn't have Grass Jelly, one of the toppings I used to get in Taiwan with my mom, which I do admit disappointed me a bit because it felt like a staple topping for shaved ice. Even though I sound highly critical, it was very nice. The person working the counter complimented my shirt and my cap and they had complementary water at the counter. It wasn't perfect but it was the closest I got to Taiwan in a while so I deeply appreciate that I was able to find it today. (07/21/2024)
