whatever happened to baby jane? (1962)
-this is a strange movie. i love jane sm. she is the joker but a woman. her messy makeup and hair, her curls, her doll outfit... she's wonderful. her dance in the end almost had me tear up. yes i know i should watch sunset boulevard. i also had a hard time finding out if bette and joan were acting or not(i knew abt their rivalry before); they were basically playing themselves.
axe (1974)
-this movie is so pretty, hazy, dream-like, and eerie. it's not scary at all. it's like a low budget grindhouse video nasty movie with 0 explicit. lisa is enchanting and her actress is perfect at playing a sad girl. there were many shots just showing lisa gazing off to the side with 0 feelings. lisa's isolated and mundane life has stripped her of any positive feelings. she is empty, and shows no emotion when killing her victims. not even rage. the aesthetics of this movie were like morute, southern gothic, farmer's daughter n cottage core but creepy. an image of lisa holding an axe circulates around tumblr and pinterest. this is like the embodiment of an ethel cain or nicole dollanganger song.
marie the doll (1976) [SA warning]
-sometimes i wonder if i actually like this movie for the themes (trapped housewife, loss of innocence, sexual repression, the fetishization of innocence/femininity) or just the cuteness of it. i am too scared to talk about the plot here, but note that it has eerie scenes, sa, and nudity. i know earlier i said this movie had some "cuteness" to it. this is because marie, 17, (played by an adult woman thank god) is always dressed up in poofy, doll-like dresses. She carries around dolls and stuffed animals, her hair is in sausage curls, she is sweet to everyone, and her room looks like a dollhouse. the aesthetics of this movie are dollette, coquette, delicate sweet, pastel, cottagecore, and other cutesy girly styles. i understand if the plot disinterests you, but the movie appears to be very cute.
the last unicorn (1982)
-this might just be one of the most gorgeous animated movies ever. i was enchanted watching this on my tv at 6 years old. amalthea was fascinating and beautiful as a unicorn and human. the landscapes of the forests looked like paradise. the prison-like castle by the sea was so mysterious, and i got so emotional when she fell in love with the prince. this movie also deals with the loss of innocence and metamorphosis. when amalthea, the immortal unicorn, is transformed into a mortal, decaying human, she becomes aware of her inevitable death and learns what 'regret' is. she discovers love, and would rather die with the prince then be turned back immortal. eventually she turns back into an immortal unicorn and frees all of the other unicorns of the world, but she is the only one who must live with a burdening remorse and traumatic memories.
pink floyd: the wall (1982)
-the themes are self-isolation, depression, loneliness, and self-destruction. i have already talked abt this WAY too much. if u like those sigma male literally me characters, you'll like this movie. basically, mr. pink bears too much trauma, and instead of getting the help he needs, he wallows in his sadness, isolates himself from society by building a metaphorical wall around him that is made of bricks that represent trauma, and fantasizes about committing violence towards other people. it's kinda like girl interrupted the movie in the way that both characters choose to stay miserable at first instead of making an effort to get better
