Emo 101

Hello !! This is a brief guide to Emo music c:

Now, what exactly is Emo?

well Emo is a music genre that originated from Hardcore Punk in the 80s in Washington, DC, though it has developed and lost its Hardcore roots by now.

80s Emo

80s Emo as i said before has its roots in Hardcore. The earliest known emo band is Rites of Spring. the word "Emo core" which comes from "Emotional Hardcore has been used to describe 80s emo

Style wise 80s Emo can be described in 3 words, energetic, agressive and of course, emotional. It had taken elements of Hardcore and combined them with emotional vocals and lyrics.

though the word Emo was used, the bands themselves rejected the label as they were hardcore punks.

examples: Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Moss Icon

90s Emo

In the 90s emo has started getting an indie rock influence and "midwest emo" originated in the 90s as well. Midwest emo is usually used to describe a specific genre of emo though It has been used to describe emo from the midwest aswell. Screamo also emerged in the 90s.

In the 90s bands started using the word emo to describe themselves for the first time, The Band Braid and The Emo Diaries (Collection) being some of the first ones.

In the late 90s emo started getting mainstream attention while slowly getting a pop-punk influence.

personally my favourite era of emo c:

examples: Dahlia Seed, Samuel S.C., Mineral, Jawbreaker, Jimmy Eat World, Drive Like Jehu, Cap 'n Jazz (Best midwest emo band imo), Jets To Brazil, Alkaline Trio, Baroque, The Get Up Kids, Samiam etc.

00s Emo

In the 00s Emo get even more pop punk elements, which in the long run caused people to be confused over what emo music actually is.

It can be known as Emo's "golden age" due to its popularits during this era though imo 00s emo getting as big as it did damaged the music and the subculture in the long run.

this is what most people think when they hear emo, teenager in the 00s with a side fring wearing skinny jeans and listening to My Chemical Romance.

Examples: Early My Chemical Romance, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, Bayside etc.

Some 00s bands people commonly confuse with Emo: P!atd, Green Day, Blink-182, Evanescene, Limp Bizkit, Falling In Reverse etc. So generally Pop-Punk and Nu Metal

10s Emo

Might be known as 4th wave or revival too.  After Emo reached Its peak in the 00s and most mainstream emo bands went on breaks or disbanded, Emo was in a weird spot.

Revival Emo incorporated both sounds from older Emo Waves (esp 90s midwest emo) while modernizing it and experienting with new sounds while also having their lyrics gets whinier and whinier.

might be my least favourite emo genre

examples: Modern Baseball, Title Fight (I love them though) etc.

20s Emo

aka 5th wave Emo, the Emo wave were experiencing right now.

It is somewhat hard to describe as not only is it developing right now but 5th wave emo bands also experiment a lot and push the limits of emo.

while the confusion about emo still remains, now styles like e-kids etc have caused even more confusion among non-emos about emo as a genre and a style.

though the confusion about emo has spread from pop punk and emo pop to genres and artists that have nothing to do with emo (why do i see 6arelyhuman in emo playlists)

Examples: Hot Mulligan, Awakebutstillinbed, etc.

my knowledge about 10s and 20s emo isnt as much as older waves so there werent that much i could say about them

I feel like the future of Emo and alt is kinda doomed bc people like TX2, Caroline Carr and Jake Webber are going around saying their music is “Emo” and “punk” like honey… honey no 🙏 and scenecore artists r staring to say their music is “scene” like… y’know what I mean

Mainstream wise def going downhill but imo that just means the good emo stuff will just move underground

This guide is so cool!!

I feel like a lot of the confusion between differenciating genres tends to stem from people lumping in things that emo kids would commonly listen to as emo itself. Like, if anything is popular with emo kids its automatically emo for no reason other than association, yk?

thanks ! and i think thats true too, like with pop punk theres the 3rd wave emo vs pop punk confusion but people lump in stuff like nu metal and grunge in with emo too and theres really no other excuse other than emo people usually liking these genres too
