hey guys, i just wanted to rant a little about gmod maps for a minute since they have been one of my favorite things to explore recently!
idk how most people feel about maps, however I personally really enjoy them, especially ones like "gm_russia" and such because they have a unique vibe to them that allows me to feel both at ease and nervous at the same time. i call this feelingĀ calmnervosnervos, which means "calmly nervous" in English.
i don't exactly get why some of these maps just feel so cozy, maybe it's the dim street lights or the fog gently covering the dark sky, but either way, i still feel safe when there, even with the tiny bit of unease that comes with a dark town at night. i guess i was just meant for the dark or something? i mean, my room lights literally are broken and can't be turned on so i have to use a dim red LED to light the room at night, which obvious doesn't do much.
another type of map i like are ones set in a pretty basic liminal space environment. liminal spaces always have held a level of intrigue as they feel so calming despite their emptiness. i don't get why a lot of people feel uncomfortable with them, i would rather be alone than have to deal with some annoying people bumping into me in the mall or kids yelling and running in front of me. sure, it could just be me being a "loner" or something but i feel like all of us once in a while want to just drop off into a liminal space and stay there for an hour or so just to chillout.
the other type of map i REALLY enjoy are urbex or abandoned building maps. i primarily enjoy these as i have had an interest in exploring old buildings. i mean, I've always seen many abandoned motels on occasions where we would drive out of town to go the mall or something, so i feel the intrigue was set as soon as those became visible and an point of interest.
one of my favorites of the urbex maps is one called "Macy's state psychiatric center" or something along those lines. it just perfectly fills in the gap of wanting to explore abandoned buildings since it was designed by someone who had actually been in old buildings before to explore, meaning that everything in there is about as accurate as it can be. there's also the fact that even with this, there are mysterious things you can choose to solve if you want to, meaning that theirs more than just exploring a old building.
anyway, here are some screenshots i took and edited of most of the aforementioned maps

I think many people (myself included) feel a bit uneasy in liminal type maps because it's almost a bit uncanny. A place that looks man-made, yet there's not a creature in sight. Or maybe there is? What if thats the reason all the people are gone? What if I'm not truly alone in the map? I'll never know.
I believe that's why most people feel uncomfortable in those types of environments. I'll always be looking over my shoulder in those maps. But I still play them sometimes, for a little horror thrill. Even though I could probably say that nothing's gonna pop out at me with a high degree of certainty, you just never know what the developers programmed into the map.

Source engine really is special! When I had more free time I used to explore gmod/hl2/l4d/csgo maps looking for inspiration for my own maps aand it was really calming and liminal.
Now after years when I go back to some of my old maps I get the same liminal feeling. Love it!
