Forcing yourself into a style (rant)

I see so many blogs on here ask what their style is called or how they can better fit a style or pick one. It's so frustrating! A lot of subcultures (like goth or punk) are more based aroung a community of politics and music whereas others (like a morikei or lolita) are a community developing a fahion style together. The catagorisation came after the community developed it, you're meant to take inspiration from whats out there and then develop it and make it your own. You don't have to put yourself in a box. You can dress more scene on some days and more emo on others.

Most subculture styles arrive out of practicality or poltical leanings. Punks were originally just poor people being loud and rejecting the shame of being poor, making mending their clothes into a visible thing. Lolita rejected the male gaze and made something fun and femenine. Grunge was born out of wearing secondhand workmens clothes because that was what you could get secondhand at the time.

Most of the time I'm just dressed punk because I can't afford new clothes so I may as well make what I have stylish. When strangers tell me they like my "grunge" look it's because I'm dressed like the poor craftsman I am.

Just wear what you want and what looks cool! Don't worry about being fashionable, just be stylish in a way that suits your tastes and your ethics and your wallet.

Idk, just wanted to get this off my chest

OMG YES! but at the same time i get where theyre coming from, apps like tiktok have made it so the idea and understanding of every style if very shallow and if you stray from it youre no longer that style. a lot of people end up feeling like posers as theyve been led to believe and just want advice on how they can 'truly' be whatever style they are trying to be, and by truly i mean the narrow redefinition of that style that they hold as the only true form of that style. (i hope that makes sense, might have explained that kinda bad)
