Hey SpaceSleepers (41): Let's Freaking Knife

The band, since I usually give a little backstory for more unknown musicians, is named after a brand of knife pens in Japan made for young boys. Their although having a really punk rock sounding sound, their music usually center on things they see as fun and frivolous and were one of the very few all-girl rock bands at the time. One really interesting fact is that Kurt Cobain loved Shonen Knife, his favorite song being Twist Barbie, to the degree they opened for one of Nirvana's European tours in 1991. It's honestly really funny to watch the interview where they say they didn't even know about Nirvana because it's such a silly little thing to me. One of the reasons that the songs are in English could be that a lot of early Japanese rock at that time was thought to be unable to be put in Japanese due to the complexities of the lengthening of the words ends would cause them to become whole new words, but I ascribe to the thought that they decided to do it for stylistic reasons.

This is one of the blind buys I did when decluttr still sold CDs on-site and although it did come with a bit of a broken case, I am really happy that I got it. My favorite song on the album has to be "I am a Cat", it's really fun and danceable. I like the idea of turning into a cat as the natural progression of being extremely lost and disoriented about your person and the way the singer just accepts their fate. Of course, "Twist Barbie" is one of the more popular songs and for good reason as it is one of the most memorable songs on the discography of the band. What's truly interesting is that the song feels deeply symbolic about being a woman, the way society views and consumes her, even though the artists say that the intention of the songs is just to be upbeat and positive. Perhaps the subject of a Barbie doll is so intertwined with idea of the ideal woman that it is almost impossible to write a song on without commentating on society to some degree. I would give the album an seven out of ten because although I enjoy it, I don't listen to it as much as My Carefree Life by Ilid Koalo (07/17/2024).
