I continue to be absolutely unhinged in my fixation on indie video game consoles, haha. I wrote a 17,000 word essay on indie consoles, their history, the current generation of them, and some of the games on them. I love them so much, it's such a fun niche. If you're interested, you can read the essay here, though obviously it's a pretty big read, haha.
My favorite is still very clearly the PlayDate, I have one now and am even have made a couple games for it. It's so amazing, the games on it are are great, it's got an amazing community, overall I love it greatly.
However, I also got a really obscure one called the P/ECE, which only released in Japan in 2001. I've barely seen anyone ever mention it, and yet, it's got some really good stuff for it, and is really nice. It's like a little gameboy, but open-source and with a home menu you can program to be anything. It's so cool.
I going to turn the essay into a video essay, I wrote it as one, but first I want to do some revisions, ad obviously it's going to be a real undertaking, as just reading it aloud is over 2 hours of time.
Anyway, that's my indie console update. If you want to learn more, check out the essay or read my other blog post about indie consoles here. Have a good day!

That's a good question! The information comes from all over the place, I had to do a lot of research. Some of the more basic stuff came from wikipedia, things like the more well-known indie consoles, but I made sure to follow their citations to direct sources, and when those didn't answer all of my questions I had to do more searching to find any kind of answers. I almost missed the existence of the P/ECE because it's almost never mentioned anywhere on the english internet, and wasn't apart of the english list of handheld game consoles on wikipedia (before I added it). Same thing for the Pyra, that was almost didn't make it in because almost nowhere is it talked about. Almost all discussion of it is in old barely archived forums or their own extremely obscure but still functioning forum, but my girlfriend just happened to have heard about it when it was first revealed. When I talked about it's predecessor, the Pandora, while explaining my essay to her, she told me she knew about it's hidden successor.
Also, as I work on editing the essay, I've found more info while searching for graphics, and had to add entirely new sections. I completely forgot about the WOWCube when first writing this, and after recording and getting like 20 minutes into the video edited, I got recommended a video of it again and suddenly remembered about it. I ended up writing and adding a new section just to talk about it in the essay. These consoles can be found anywhere, it's very difficult to make a comprehensive list, as hard as I've tried to, haha.
