i honestly hate how natural makeup is the most popular style online right now. i hate how bland and boring it is. i hate the way it makes people feel more insecure without it. and i hate the way its changed peoples perception on more dramatic makeup, nowadays people who wear a lot of makeup are automatically seen as insecure and self hating. i hate everything about this trend and i want it to die asap.
i miss fun makeup, makeup with colour and individual flare. it feels like people dont try with their makeup anymore, like they dont enjoy it they just wear it because thats whats expected from them socially. it feels like people are just less creative overall nowadays, either that or they care more about fitting in with everyone else that they begin to sacrifice the wants and desires of their true selves. it was so fun to see people experimenting with their makeup and style in the lockdowns of 2020 and the short period after where people stopped caring about other peoples opinions. now a lot of people look the same to me as none of them stand out anymore and i often struggle with remembering faces. now dont get me wrong, i dont think natural makeup looks bad or ugly, it just bores me, i find it very unremarkable.
i feel like peoples perception on makeup has shifted over the past few years. before, people used to use it as something to help express themselves and complete their outfits where as now, people seem to use it to cover up any perceived facial flaws and make them look as close to perfect as they can get with the face they were given. i think this was partially caused by social media, tiktok in particular. besides the most obvious thing of people ruthlessly nitpicking others appearances, something else i think impacted this are the many makeup tutorials (if you can even call them that) that are supposed to show you how to do your makeup according to your features or whatever. though these may not seem like much of a problem, i think that the wording used in them often makes it seem as though the features mentioned are ugly and the only way to make them look good is through the tips in the videos.
this new perception of makeup automatically makes anyone who wears a noticeable amount of makeup appear insecure to anyone who holds it as the amount of make up must equate to the number of flaws the person has, right?? i find this assumption very ironic as well as some of the most confident people ive ever met wear a lot of makeup and some of the most insecure ones often wear little to no makeup (that obviously doesnt mean that everyone who wears heavy makeup is confident and vice versa).
i want this trend to end. putting such a strong emphasis on natural beauty and holding such a strong hatred for so called 'artificial beauty' puts stress on women to be perfect naturally as getting any kind of enhancements, big or small, will automatically make them ugly no matter what. this may sound counter intuitive but i feel like natural beauty being the standard is making people more insecure than ever, feeling the need to get so much work done in order to be perceived as perfect for the approval of strangers when the idea of natural beauty was to promote feeling comfortable in your own skin.

For real! I agree with youe so heavily on this that its insane. I do makeup myself and I think it might look basic I also wish I knew how to express myself a little bit more. I also hate how apps like tik tok has influenced us to hide all of our interest just because it seems somewhat
"unusual" I hope people start to wake up more on this and learn that it is indeed OKAY to be yourself! Like why else don't people say it?

i agree with this SO heavily! also the reply you had to the other persons comment i also agree with. the world is so boring. i hate how so many people in 2020-2021 were like "lets bring back cringe!" or "be yourself!" then not even 2 years later we immediately go back to high standardized fashion and aesthetics. i have nothing against people who like to dress mainstream, but the harsh hatred for anyone who is alternative is SO unnecessary. it always feels like a constant battle in any social or public situation to look your best or to fit in, but its SO boring. everyone blends together nowadays and im so sick of it.
3 or so years ago you would see someone dressed "out of the norm" anywhere in public but now i BARELY see anyone like that. its so weird. i dont understand why peoples looks, appearance, even MUSIC INTERESTS AND PERSONALITIES are constantly scrutinized by others. the thing that sucks the most is how this bland, plain, colorless norm has been translated into things (like you said in your reply to the other user) such as architecture, design, etc.
and something i especially hate is when those people who have such a meaningless grudge against those out of the norm say stuff like "be yourself <3" when their idea of "yourself" is this nearly impossible standard that SO many people struggle to get into.
SO SORRY for the long comment, im just super passionate about this topic. you worded this all wonderfully!! <3
for your point about not seeing alternative people much anymore, im lucky enough to live in one of the bigger cities in the country so i do see a few alternative people when i go out, mainly in the city centre. but that number has definitely decreased over the past 2 years and it kind makes me sad. i get so excited whenever i see another atlernative person, even though theyre usually goth or punk and other similar styles and im not. i cant imagine what its like to constantly be pretty much the only person thats different from the rest, i wish you the best and hope it doesnt discorage you from expressing yourself no matter what that may look like.

definitely! i feel like a basic style isnt only becoming more common in makeup, but also clothing. its definitely not a bad style, but its so bland and boring and almost makes me sad
i think ur perspective on the topic is super insightful<33
it honestly kinda makes me sad to see how we seem to be going backwards in terms of creativity. not even just in makeup/fashion but literally everything. from movies to architecture to product packaging to ads to even fine art, theyre all so dull now, devoid of personality.
