scene, masculinity, and me

Are you there doG? It's me, Judah. Some rambling ahead.

I think I'm drawn to 'scene' expression and fashion partially because I've always been 'too expressive' for a guy: too exuberant, too smiley or exciteable; even quick to cry. As this repressive society sees it, men are meant to be stoic and never feel or express anything too strongly, or they're girly, weak, a pussy, etc. Exceptions are made for anger, and excuses are made for damaging behavior tied to said anger, and everyone comes out of it dysfunctional and unhappy. ( :

So the colorful, loud, exuberant, and even slightly feminine—without being 'effeminate'—style resonates. Even the typically 'masculine' aggression and overt sexuality. I'm not a particularly aggressive or sexual person, but I suppose everyone needs an outlet.

That being said, when it comes to 'crunk' music I just can't seem to get into it. it's not because it's loud or abrasive... I listen to music like that just fine. Just not crunk. Anyone got any recommendations, or at least feel the same?

I totally get what you're saying. It makes sense for ppl that are expressive to feel welcome in the scene style.
To what you said about not liking the music I can say that I personally like it but I get what you mean. It's objectively seen bad music. Like poorly made. This music was mostly made by teens or early adults that just tried to mix a few genres together and sing to it in not the perfect voice. Like it was good if your voice sounded bad lol. And the songs (as far as I have seen it, correct me if I'm wrong) are mostly about parties, alcohol and drugs, s3xual stuff, just random nerdy shit or all of them together.
They don't have a deeper meaning.
And that's not exactly what I like about music lol. But I sometimes appreciate the simplicity of these songs or just the vibe. Often I'm not in the right mood but sometimes I am. And when I am scene music slaps. Even if it's bad.
For emotional breakdowns or raging about the world I listen to other stuff.
My tip for you would be to get in the mood to listen to dumb stuff. Like don't expect to discover masterpieces or to only listen to scene stuff xD
And if you still don't like the music that's fine too, don't pressure yourself :P

i totally get this - i feel drawn to emo and scene bc it lets me feel like i can mask my 'inherent femininity' as masculine emo - i have long hair n wear makeup, but in the way emo guys do. that way, if someone assumes i'm a girl i can just say 'nah i get it, i have long hair n makeup' n pretend [to them and myself lol] that that's the reason they thought i was a girl, not bc i look/sound/act like one otherwise :P i know it's not exactly what ur describing here, but it's close enough that i thought i'd share my own experience :]
